bed slat edges for stepsides

I've been trying to take those side corners that hold down the wood off without damaging the bed sides. my air chisel dents the bed but a saw would be tedious and slow. how do most people do it?

sand down the paint so you can see where the spot welds are then drill them out ... be ready to be there a while as well.
