Question about transfer case
The transfer case adapter I will be using has a fair amount of surface rust and pitting on the area that mates to the transfer case. It appears that there is normally just a very, very thin gasket used in this location.
I don't believe the adapter holds any gear oil so I'm guessing that having that surface completely clean and smooth is not critical. Is that correct?

If you're mating this adapter to an automatic transmission, there is some fluid that will enter this coupling. If you'll notice, there are 2 oil seals in the adapter. There is a reason for this. A small amount of ATF will be kept from passing through to the transfer case by these seals, and keep it from leaking out of the adapter by that large "O" ring on the flange of the adapter where it mates to the transmission. I just rebuilt my 205 and put new seals in this adapter last week, so the info is fresh in my brain. Good luck.

It's mating to a 4 speed manual and I did get new seals for it and the Rockwell T-221 so sounds like I will be okay, I will try to clean it up a bit, but won't spend to much time. Thanks

Hey Mark, Merry Christmas to you, the wifey, and the girls!
How's the project going? Hope you got a chance to take advantage of the nice weather last week. Did you get the spot fixed by the kick panel? Thought any more about paint while it's apart (Jason and I promised we would keep trying to talk you into it you know)? Enjoy the "White Christmas" nature has provided us, later, LB.

Merry Christmas to you also. I got the transfer case cleaned up last weekend along with some other brackets. Hope to get the cab pulled over the holiday and get it to my friend to fix a couple problem areas.
Paint, who needs paint! Nah, can't do a real paint job right now, just too short on cash and I want it back together NOW!!! A few can's of olive drab just might hit it while it's apart to get it one color - who knows.

Not sure on the Rockwell until I get it apart, but on the 465/205 setup that area does see oil. The transmission does not have a seal on the rear of the mainshaft and hole in the adapter for the coupling goes straight through to the transfer case.
