Anyone ever thought about or got a hidden wheel lift for their truck?

Since I am always having something towed...i thought this might be a good idea for my Dually. http://www.metro-lifts.com/lift_tow.htm

Been thinking about this before I got my truck.

I'd get one as long as it wont drag or tag anything, great for scrapping cars as well.

Re: Anyone ever thought about or got a hidden wheel lift for their truck?

ive thought about it many times.. i had even looked at the ones by ebay. they seem pretty cheap. I have towed things with a real tow truck a while back worked part time as a tow guy. I can honestly say that if youre going to go that route the snatch and grab ( Z Type in your link) is the way to go . You don even have to get out of the truck everything is on a remote that sets in the cab.. there is also one you can plug in the back ( at least on Jerr dann models). You also want to buy a kit that is made by a decent manufacturer and not some chinese made junk which is hard to get parts for.. you will have several hydraulic cylinders on the truck and they will need resealing and it will be difficult if not impossible to get parts ( seal kits) from some of the cheap import companies, and buying a cylider will definately be expensive if it has to be custome fitted for your rig..
It may be cheaper to just buy a used or very used wrecker that has a reputable tow bed on it
I would think that it isnt cost effective unless youre going to be towing on a daily basis and im sure you would have to beef up the chassis some as i see body shop chase trucks with the sling type tow units with chassis that bow..
I was thinking for a while of opening a tow truck company and doing scrap until everyone started doing it here..
Also note that once you have this kind of unit on a truck, your insurance will not cover you .. you have to get commercial tow truck insurance and then there are issues with DOT and licensing for tow trucks depending on the state you are in.. even for a personal rig here you have to have a tow id by the consumer affairs department...
Lastly several members here have tow trucks... some are older models , and at least one member who comes in once in a while (jersey girl) is in the towing business with her husband.. you may want to ask there

Re: Anyone ever thought about or got a hidden wheel lift for their truck?

The reason why I want to go with the hidden one is so I can keep the bed. I wont be towing as a professional everyday thing. I just want it when I need to go grab something....like parts trucks and stuff like that. I am going to check into the insurance thing tomorrow. See how much more it may be.

I don't know about your area but here you would need a DOT number.
It costs big money to have a tow truck in Tx, even before insurance costs,
or I would have a tow truck myself.
