flywheel help?

I am switching from a 3 speed to a 700r4 and am in need a new flywheel.
I saw a couple and and they have a 153 tooth and 168 i think?
its for a 307 out a 1970.
anyone tell me exactly what specs i need?

168 tooth is the most common for trucks. As long as the convertor fits the pattern on the flexplate and the starter matches the flexplate, it does not mattter much. There are two different starters, depending on which flexplate is used. One other thing to consider is the dust cover for the convertor. It can be changed, but they move the starter cutout in for the smaller flexplate and move it to the outside edge for the larger flexplate.

Keep in mind to look out for a flexplate off a 400 cid sbc. Those flexplates had additional weight on them to externally balance the 400. That extra weight could add a harmonic causing a vibration to your driveline. FYI.

Can anyone confirm the second one will fit??
Also another problem i just ran into is the starter..
on the three speed it bolts to the tranny, and on the 700r4 it does not have same mounting plate, i know the dust shield has the hole cut out for it, but how do i mount it? do i need a new starter that can mount the motor??

The second one says it is for a 383-400 eng externally balanced. Yes you will need a different starter.

any 168 tooth flexplate for a SBC with a two piece rear main seal would work for you (not a 400 though, as mentioned before).

Most that you buy now have dual bolt patterns for the two different converter patterns. You could go to the parts store and get a flexplate for a 1970 307 with a th350 transmission and it should work fine. Take your measurements and check it before you walk out the door.

Now for the different starter, is it going to bolt to the block? and does anyone possibly have a good picture of a bolted up 700r4?

Alright one more question, for the starter i need one that bolts to the block, is there only one style that does this? If so will this starter bolt up for me?

You need the starter that has the staggered bolt holes for the 168. Straight across bolt holes fits the 153.

anyone have a picture of a staggered bolt pattern compared to the straight, a lot of the starters ive been looking at say they will fit 168 and 153 tooth flexplates.

i just googled some good pictures of the difference, and think im gonna go with one of skip whites, ebay item number 250404662246
