help with manual transmission

Hi all I’m facing something with may manual transmission, it is hard to shift backward and it is impossible to shift to the 1st while my truck moving.

I changed the transmission oil.
Where to look?

Re: help with manual transmission

Which manual transmission do you have? If it is the SM-465, first and reverse do not have syncros so that can happen. I have that tranny in my burb and sometimes I have problems getting it in reverse...usually I put it in neutral and let out the clutch to get things spinning a bit and then try to shift back in to reverse. First gear is so low I don't even try to shift to first while moving.

Re: help with manual transmission

The 2 tranny's are virtually identical. Down shifting has always been an issue with them if you try it at to high a speed. Try keeping the truck below 25 mph and run thru the gears nice and easy. 1st and rev have no syncros so those will grind. 2, 3 and 4 should shift quietly and fairly easily if speed is low enough. If tranny is quiet in all forward speeds chances are it's OK. If you still have trouble, look at clutch adjustment. 2 inches free travel in pedal is about right. These tranny's are bullet proof and last forever. I have a 465 in my 84 and it's comming up on half a million miles and it works like new. Let us know, jim

The worst thing you could do is get into my sights, but that don't matter, you'll never know it, cause you'll never hear the shotJim or Paladin whichever you choose.

Re: help with manual transmission

How long have you had your truck? The truck 4 speeds will not operate like a car 4 or 5 speed.
