Shes ALIVE!
Over the past FOUR years Ive been SLOWLY working with my truck.....slowly mainly because I am not a gear head....I work on computers and do this as a hobby because of the "simplicity" (HAH) of a v8 engine. My dad and son have helped some but my father got ill and ultimately passed away this past summer after a long bout with Prostate Cancer....my dad was a mechanic for Ga Power for 35 years so he could tell me what was wrong by listening or looking...and even some times with me telling him what it sounded or looked like. Well now he is gone so you could say this has become an ode to my dad....ie finishing it by MYSELF (HAH).
Well today after a 15 min trip to McDonald for breakfast and a side trip to Advanced Auto for a new fuel pump she ROARED to life. The Purple Hornies I hung off the headers sound pretty cool....the idle was new car smooth....the timing is perfect....especially for a non gear head! For what little I have let her run (15 second intervals for 3 or 4 different times) she sounds so sweet. Dad would have loved it. BUT my electric oil pressure is not registering so I fear for that I still may have a problem. I guess its time to read up and figure out with out dad how to handle the oil pressure problem. Thanks to all of those who have jumped in and subsidized my dad's knowledge and help along the way!

Re: Shes ALIVE!
Congrats on the truck. Glad to hear that another classic was spared from the junkyard and will be on the roads. Good job.

Re: Shes ALIVE!
buy a cheap mechanical oil pressure guage to make sure. a real indication of no oil pressure is if the engine is making a knocking soud in the bottom end. but crancragulations on the engine

Re: Shes ALIVE!
I second the idea of using a mechanical gauge just to double check. That engine would be making a lot of racket with no oil pressure.

Re: Shes ALIVE!
OK....Im thinking it is a wiring issue with the pressure sending unit. More to come.

Re: Shes ALIVE!
Glad to hear your finishing the build in memory of your Dad. Like you, my Dad passsed on his love of cars to me and I hope one day my son will continue the legacy. Back to your oil pressure problem, bad grounds are usually the cause of most electrical problems. Make sure you have grounds in the following places:
Motor to cab cab to chassis chassis to motor Take a grinder or sandpaper and get down to the metal. If you do this well, any electrical stuff you hook up should work without a problem. Take care and can't wait to see some pictures. EDIT: Forgot to mention, if you use to much teflon tape on the tip of the oil pressure sending unit, that can prevent a good ground from occuring.

Re: Shes ALIVE!
Oil Pressure gauge power wire had been cut and its fuse blown....see what I mean about how simple these things are....
Purrs like a kitten now....@ 40 psi is what the gauge now reads.
