Stepside beds: bedsides welded to back panel?

I'm taking apart the step side bed on my '67 C20. The back end of both bed sides was welded to the panel that sits just below the tail gate. Is this factory?

Drat! That's going to throw a wrench in my plans to paint everything separately and then bolt it together.

Suggestions?

Just because it was welded at the factory does not mean that it has to be reassembled that way! For instance, weld an L shaped bracket to the bedside and then bolt the bracket to the bed floor.

you can do what I did is paint the bed sides and rear bed panel together and the fenders, front panel, tailgate and steps separate.
