230 to 250 swap

Hey, will a 1982 Chevy pickup 250 6 cylinder engine bolt up to my 3 on the tree trans. of my 64 C-10?

Yes. But the clutch linkage is different, iirc. And the starter will be one that bolts up from the bottom instead of bolting to the bell housing.

Does the 250 have the integral head with the intake combined? I am not fond of that head. The airflow is horrible and they crack easily. The good thing is that the older 250 head and manifold bolts on.

Thanks for the reply. I have not seen the engine. I found it on craigslist. May be I want to stay with the 230. What about the 292? Is it the same as the 230 as far as bolt up? I would suppose the clutch may be bigger?

Several things specific to the 292...

1) The 292 uses larger flywheel bolts. Other than the bolt holes, the flywheels will interchange. Years ago I swapped a 292 in place of a 250. I simply ran a drill through the flywheel holes to open them up larger to match the 292s bolts. It took about a minute total. That way you can reuse your original 230 flywheel and starter.

2) The 292 uses a different passenger side engine frame mount than your 230 does. With the proper mount, it will bolt in place. Look in the 67-72 parts board. They are more common over there.

As far as the starter, your present starter should have a cast iron nosecone that bolts to the bellhousing...

The later engines used an aluminum starter nosecone that bolts to the block instead with two (special) bolts.

Here is a picture that I took showing the two...

Your present starter will continue to work with the 292, bolted to the bellhousing like it has been for 45 years now.

If it were me, speaking from firsthand experience here, I would remove your present 230 flywheel, drill the holes larger, and install it on the 292. This will allow you to reuse your present starter, flywheel, clutch, everything. All you would need to buy would be the right side engine frame mount mentioned above.

Do note though, that 292s typically used a larger flywheel and clutch assembly to handle the extra torque. Your present smaller flywheel and clutch will work fine, however, if you use the 292 torque hard, you might experience somewhat premature clutch failure.

Regards,
Kevin

What is the difference in the clutch linkage? I'm getting ready to do this swap in my 65. I bought a 78 for a doner truck but it is an automatic so no linkage to look at.
