This sounds crazy. Anyone know?
I had a guy at a shop tell me the best way to clean up the inside of a motor is while its running at about 3500 rpm slowly pour about half a quart of trans fluid down your carb. has anyone ever heard of this or done it.

Re: This sounds crazy. Anyone know?
it will work. i use solvent (varsol) slowly in the carb and keep the revs up,also use sea foam as per inst on the can. the is helps to decarbon the top end of the motor.

Re: This sounds crazy. Anyone know?
The mechanic that worked in the shop next to mine would always pour water down the carb while he held the rpm up. He claimed it was the only way to clean out the carbon build up.

Re: This sounds crazy. Anyone know?
l have done the "liquid valve Job" many times in the past, on older vehicles. It does a fair job of cleaning the carbon from the inside of cylinders and off of valves. The 3500 RPM thing is a little high, though. All you have to do is take manual control of the butterfly on the carb and keep the engnine running while you pour fluid down the throat. Right at the end let the carb choke down and the engine stop. After a slight soak period, take the vehicle and drive it. IF nothing else you will eliminate some mosquitos in your area. Brake fluid works, also, but if spiloled it can be hard on paint.

Re: This sounds crazy. Anyone know?
I have put the fluid in a squirt bottle so I didn't pour too much in at once.

ZMax? http://www.zmax.com/why/how_to/
You mentioned "the inside of a motor." Did you mean the carbon buildup on the pistons and valves and combustion chambers or the lubricated part of the engine? The down the carb trick is mainly to clean the engine of carbon buildup and stuck rings due to carbon buildup. It doesn't do anything to the rest of the engine. I like the idea of ZMax for the fuel and oil. Might be something to try. |

Re: This sounds crazy. Anyone know?
i used Zmax once. did'nt do any harm. have used dura lube. these are more a metal treatment or a cover your ass if you over heat or run on low oil psi.

Re: This sounds crazy. Anyone know?
Do not "Pour" anything into the engine, this is the kind of advice that will hydrolock your engine and bend stuff not meant to bend, from what I understan water works as good as anything for cleaning carbon, use a small trickle , too much will hurt the engine. keep revs up as you pour you will hear it bog down, slow the pour down...Water does not burn, but does create a steam thet will take off carbon build up...but in its liquid form cannot be commpresed and acts as a solid and will cause piston to head clearance issues.

Re: This sounds crazy. Anyone know?
The stuff does work, though. The other answer is to go to a shop and have them run a Motorvac cleaning on it. It puts stuff in the intake as the vehicle is running and gets the carbon off.

Re: This sounds crazy. Anyone know?
I think what you are talking about is called FOGGING. There is an actual product on the market that is designed for this. I think AMSOIL carries a "fogging oil" you can probably run a search on that to find the info you are looking for.

Re: This sounds crazy. Anyone know?
I used to use BG44K. Find a vacuum hose and let it suck the fluid in the motor.

Re: This sounds crazy. Anyone know?
I have never used it to clean the inside of an engine, but I have used transmission fluid to build back up the compression on a rotary motor (rx7). Did wonders, but smoked like heck for awhile!

Re: This sounds crazy. Anyone know?
There used to be after-market 'Water Injector' kits that were said to keep everything nice and clean. Kinda like how you can always tell which is the problem hole if you blow a head gasket and losing coolant into a cyl-that one will be very clean.
I alwaays dump in a quart of ATF in the crankcase if I'm gonna rebuild the motor. Dump it in then go for a 10 or 15 mile drive-that really breaks up the sludge and makes cleaning a breeze.

It was an after market "sprayer" that had a nozzle going through the top on the air cleaner. If the engine started to detonate, the driver turned on the water & let it spray into the carburetor. A lot of folks made their own using windshield wash pumps instead of paying premium $'s for an aftermarket kit.

Re: This sounds crazy. Anyone know?
There was recently a report on tv about the internal engine cleaning some shops are pushing on their customer. They had a lubrication engineer explaining what the shops were trying to sell. He highly recommended staying away from the internal cleaning devises. He stated that they do more harm than good to an engine. He was referring to a newer fuel injected engine, not sure how he would feel about an older carb motor. As for cleaning the lubricated parts, he recommended adding a quart of ATF, when you are going to do an oil change. Warm up the engine to operating temp. Then draining the oil/ATF. He stated that the ATF is more of a solvent than a lubricant, and would help remove built up sludge deposits in the motor. Just thought I would pass this info on.
