Smile Finally bought a truck...

This is my first Cheyenne.. Got it for $1500. Every panel has a ding, but the rust isn't too bad. It's a '72 LWB, PB, PS, A/C.

The truck had been sitting for 2 years in a garage. I replaced the battery, changed the oil, emptied/cleaned out the gas tank, put on a new fuel pump/fuel filter and drove it home.

It has an Edelbrock 650 and the old style R-12 A/C. The PO said it had a 'pontiac 400'. First newby question is how do i verify the engine, transmission and rear-end? (maybe i should ask each of these on seperate threads.. lol..)

Here's a few pics

Re: Finally bought a truck...

On this thread, asking those quetions is fine. Looks like a great buy. I don't know much about Pontiac engines, but I believe the distributor is not in the back like a chevy V8. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: Finally bought a truck...

Do you have a picture of the engine? I can tell you if it's a Pontiac. Might even try to talk you out of it

Re: Finally bought a truck...

I'm thinking it's a Chevy 400 then as the dist is in the back. I'm guessing the trans is a TH400 but not sure how to check.

Second/Third pic are trans.
Forth/Fifth pic are rear-end.

Re: Finally bought a truck...

the SPID shows that it is an original 402 BBC truck. The motor appears to be a typical Small Block Chevy. Can't tell what size without more information. The manifold on the drivers side appears to be from a later motor.

Get a picture of the motor facing from the front, get a picture of the entire trans pan to ID that. If you can get a picture of the harmonic balancer that will tell you if it is a SBC 400 or just a 350/305/327 etc etc. (The 400 balancer has a section of the outer ring "missing". All the others will be round without the missing section)

Re: Finally bought a truck...

That's awesome! Thanks for the help guys.

So I would guess this is the original 12 bolt rear-end? Any advice on figuring out what the rear end gearing is?

Re: Finally bought a truck...

since it doesn't appear to have a factory posi, jack the whole rear end up and spin the driveshaft. Count how many driveshaft turns there are to one complete revolution of the tires. if you get almost 4, it's probably 3.73, little over 3, probably 3.08, and more than 4, probably 4.10. should be a 3.08 geared truck with the automatic transmission. nice find, btw

Re: Finally bought a truck...

should actually be a 3.07. The 3.08 was a gear for the passenger car 12 bolt.

Re: Finally bought a truck...

Ok, so just thought i would follow up. I finally started deconstruction this weekend. Have most of the interior out and the front sheet metal off. So i was able to get a picture of the block serial number. Looks like i was pretty lucky.

Re: Finally bought a truck...

The valve covers are not BB valve covers which are smooth and the A/c was on the passenger side on a BB truck.
