3890462 Double Hump heads Serpentine Conversion???
Hey guys, does anyone know of some kind of brackets that I can use to still run my serpentine setup with the heads listed above. They have NO accessory holes in them. I don't have the option of running different newer performance heads like vortecs. I'm poor. lol. Anyways, if I can't run my serpentine setup do I have another choice on mounting my factory alternator to a different bracket setup. I know I can run a different ps pump if needed, i'm just concerned about my alternator (factory 1991 S10). All of this is in my S10. I currently have a 350 in it with junk 305HO heads. I'm wanting to run the new heads, 3890462 when I change out the cam. Thanks for your help, It's great appreciated!! I don't mind changed the PS pump and water pump, but my alternator is the concern. Thanks again.

You have a couple of chocies -
1 - see if you can trade heads for a newr set of camel humps with the acc holes - I think 69 and 70 heads have the holes 2 - drill the holes you need in the heads - I have had many sets of camel humps with holes drilled in them to move the alt to the passenger side 3 - buy a low mount alt bracket from Jegs, summit, Lokar what ever and get it away from the top of the motor - this option may force you to give up the serp set up - but maybe not - I know all the major players make Vbelt and serp set ups I would think someone makes a low mount alt bracket for a serp

Anybody know how deep you drill the holes in to the head without hitting the water jacket?

Re: 3890462 Double Hump heads Serpentine Conversion???
Most of the heads that I have had are drilled in the side but into the valve cover area so they put a nut and bolt thru the sidewall of the head - the nut is in with the rocker arms and stuff - makes it real convenant to change the alt bracket.
Ever thought about offering to trade your heads for a set of later model Vortec heads - you just might be able to make that deal work

Re: 3890462 Double Hump heads Serpentine Conversion???
If I could find someone that would make the trade for some vortechs that would be great. But, I'm outta cash right now, I have a friend grinding the valves and seats today for free. I also have the new seals, new springs and retainer's coming in today, on top of the new cam (that's why I'm outta money). I was hoping to get it put together this weekend, but no later than next saturday. I found a few brackets on summit but, I'm wanting to keep my power steering. I can't keep my power steering with some of the brackets locating the alternator to the bottom of the engine.

You should be able to move the ALT to the passenger side so you can keep both and use the low mount bracket

Re: 3890462 Double Hump heads Serpentine Conversion???
Most of the guys still running double hump heads do so as they want the "old" look and don't want the serpentine belts or the look of serpentine belts.
Double hump heads being "old school" for a a lack of a better term using the V belts and having the "the way they did it back then" appearance. The serpentine system even though they have been around for over 20 years now falling into the "high tech an billet" catagory of truck building thinking. With those heads on the engine I think I would go with a V belt system like came on the truck and let all the mouth breathers ooh and aah and holler "hey Bubba look at dis one! it has fulie heads". |

Re: 3890462 Double Hump heads Serpentine Conversion???
Try Billet Specialties or Zoops for brackets. I know they make a couple configurations. I have seen High and tight, normal, and Low mounts. I had to buy one to move my Alt to drivers side with camel hump heads. Now im still at a loss for AC brackets (which was the whole reason for moving the alt). I think I have it all figured out now should I choose to keep the SBC. But anyway. For those special brackets. I think they make em all.
I'm sure you already know. But remember to use a reverse turning water pump for Serpentine Belt set ups. Tuff Stuff makes chrome ones in reg. and rev. for 79 bucks.

Re: 3890462 Double Hump heads Serpentine Conversion???
I have a serpentine setup on my truck right now (the factory setup from my 4.3). I basically need to move my alternator the the passenger side and get a low mount ps pump bracket. I don't mind a v-belt setup as long as I can keep my stock alternator and my ps pump. Can someone help me find the correct setup then?? I can deal with changing the water pump back to a regular rotation. Thanks for your help.

Re: 3890462 Double Hump heads Serpentine Conversion???
Well, I found out that I can use a few march performance parts to mount my alternator. Now, I've got to find a PS mount. The part numbers, in case anyone wants them are as follows.
MCH-20122 MCH-20121 The first part number allows MCH-20121 to be used on vehicles without the accessory holes in the heads. |
