Help With Radio - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have a radio, i dont know what kind it is. it is an Am/Fm with tape player.on the top it says:

FCC ID: AZE9ZERX
COUSTIC EI
MADE IN TAIWAN

CAT. NO. RX-3000
STEREO CASSETTE TAPE PLAYER
WITH AM/FM/MPX RADIO
FREQ> RANGE: AM ~ 530-1605
FM ~ 88-108
DC 12V. NEGATIVE GROUND
this reciver complies with
FCC requirements, part 15

Also on the top part in the bottom right it says
AZIMUTH
Anybody have any info?

I can tell you that it's a Negative ground 12V DC, am/fm radio with cassette that complies with FCC requirements...and that it was made in Taiwan!!!

i wish there was a name on it, it wasnt made for a chevy ( no marks) and it has no trademarks/name on it

ok so far from searchg the FCC website it is made by G P Electronics Ltd in 1982. in hong kong, no details though

I would think black is ground and red is power, but who knows.

red's power,black's ground green and grey are left and right. It must be old if doesn't have a front to back fader.

It has been awhile since I have hooked one of these up in one of these trucks, so bear with me....you might wait to have someone else verify these steps before doing anything, so one of you guys verify this for me ok?

RED - Power. There should be a factory power wire in the general area of the radio location, maybe an old plug is hanging in there? If not, you can run it to the fuse box, see if there is a blade type hookup on the fuse box (may be called ACC for accessory). You can crimp a female end to your wire and hook to the blade thing on the fusebox (you can get a kit with wire ends and a crimper tool at any parts store). Make sure there is a fuse holder on this red power wire, it is just a tube with wires coming out of both ends, it has a fuse inside. This way if something goes wrong you will only blow that fuse, not one on the fuse box or mess up some wiring somewhere else.

If you are not sure what has power, use a power tester...looks like a pointed screwdriver with a black wire with an alligator clip coming out of the handle. Alligator clip hooks up to any ground (use the body of the truck if you need to). Then touch the pointed end to an area you think has power. Also, it is best to use something that is only on when the ignition is on, so test for power with the ignition on, and once you find something, turn the ignition off and test again. IF it doesn't have power then, then it is only on when the power is on and that is what you want.

Black - Ground. If there is a black wire in the factory plug, hook this upto that. If not, probably easiest way to do this is to ground to some part of the body. If you see a screw handy that goes into metal, unscrew the screw some... you can wrap this around the screw and screw it in.

Green and Gray wires: Run one of these to each speaker you are running. This gives the audio to the speakers. Since that is all the wires, youll need to ground each speaker, either to body or you can run a ground wire from one speaker to the other (I think). If there was a factory plug, it should have wires for speakers also, so you can run it to them instead if you are using the factory speakers in the truck.

Again, please wait for someone else to verify these steps...I have not hooked one up in an old truck for a good while.

Also....the most important thing is to make sure that the Red (power) and Black (ground) are hooked up correctly....if you get them backwards you will fry the radio.

Here is that diagram....this is what should go to where. Also, from my experience, RED is ALWAYS power so keep that in mind. Surely the radio was not made with the wiring backwards....does it have a wiring diagram on the radio?

it had the diagram on the back, but it got rubbed off, i was sure black was power but i could be wrong. so far i have to hook the power to the radio fuse in the fusebox, how do i hook ub the speakers? were does the ground wire go?

Check the instructions in my other post above, it will advise where to put them.

If you are unsure, you should take the radio to a local store or something...or get a friend to come help you hook it up. Don't take a chance on frying it if you are uncomfortable doing the wiring.

Also, you might see if someone else verifies the isntructions I put on here. They may have more input for you.

I always hook the red to brake light fuse, so I can turn it on without the key less pull on the battery. Ground the speakers to black on the radio run a wire from that to you brake bracket.

Red= positive [Maddog1331 was right about where to tap into power.]
Black= ground
The other two are your speaker + connections. Wire the negative terminals of your speakers to ground (sheet metal should suffice.)

If you really want to find out all the info about that deck contact the manufacturer - Coustic

Azimuth is for adjustment of the tape head gap relative to the tape.

Coustic is the brand name of the unit. It appears to be too old for the models still listed on their website. They dont appear to make head units anymore. Here is a link to what legacy models they still have instructions on, maybe one of them is an upgrade to yours and the instructions will work.
