whats needed for a 501 caddy swap
I've seen this posting before but can't seem to locate it now. Anyway I have found a couple of old caddy hurst both have the 501 in them and I was wondering what all was needed to do the swap and how to accomplish this without breaking the bank. Thanks

Re: whats needed for a 501 caddy swap
Longhornman has done the Caddy swap. I'm sure he'll jump in on this.

Re: whats needed for a 501 caddy swap
Seen one done here just outside of town at the salvage yard w/a 500 series caddy engine.
The guy that built the engine (or at least installed it) put a short section of heavy chain secured to the motor/frame along side of the motor mounts. I was told it was just a precautionary step. Added insurance I guess. It was nicely done and didn't look bad. Greg |

thank you bill! Looks like you have this covered.
Just one thing I'd like to add... there's no such thing as a 501. It's a 500. |

Re: whats needed for a 501 caddy swap
I figured you'd see this one. Yea, I saved all that stuff "just in case." You inspired me, but there's 2 problems; I never found a Caddy donor, and I'm too lazy.

Re: whats needed for a 501 caddy swap
Thanks guys,
Longhornman, You say there is no 501? just curious and not rying to start any S@!t but when I was looking at the engines yesterday both of them had a sticker on the left valve cover saying 501ci? is this just because they rounded up like they often do? or is there something I'm missing here? Thanks for the links and I hope I can decide if I wont to do this. Longhorn, didn't I read on here that you have done this swap/ What kind of mileage (as if it really matters) do you get out of this beast.

Re: whats needed for a 501 caddy swap
I asked about the 501 thing years ago on a caddy board... if you were to look at the vehicle emisions sticker on the caddy with the 501, you'll see in smaller print, it says 500 cid.
I don't know why the heck GM played this stupid game, they did it on these trucks too... calling a 402 a 400... then on all the muscle cars built after 69 with a 396.... bull, they didn't even make a 396 after 69, they were 402 cid engines. I want to say the formal response was related to smog certification. It makes no sence, but that's what *I THINK* the caddy guys said. Yes, you did read that I did this swap. The caddy one ton link above is my site. As for my MPG... Mine's in a 4.10 geared truck, and my engine is junkyard fresh and worn 30 over. Being that my speedo isn't acurate (as in WAY the heck off), I have only been able to get a dead on acurate number a couple times. I'd mapquest the trip, and follow it to the letter... use the mile number the computer spit out at me, and then do the math on my MPG. First time I got 16 MPG, and the other time I got 14. I've seen reports of 19 and even 21 MPG in smaller lighter trucks with better freeway gears... but I am just going by there word too. I am only running a 425 and ot a 500 though... but when i had the 500 my MPG seemed the same as with the 425... but, I never did a dedicated MPG run on that one. My 425 is getting old worn and sick, and I am only getting 10 - 12'ish out of it now. Last edited by Longhorn Man; 04-26-2009 at 10:35 PM. |

Re: whats needed for a 501 caddy swap
Thanks Longhorn. That would explain the 501-500 issue and 14-16 mpg isn't that bad for a 1ton and 4:10 gears. Mines the ugly truck in the pic. and it has a built 700r4 and a 3:73 posi rear.Should make for some real fun trips to the dump or grocery store. I hope to be painting it in the next couple of weeks, so it want be ugly no mo. I cant wait, and I cant decide what color. I was thinking silver with a black stripe then I thought silver with a blue stripe, now I'm thinking Blue with a silver stripe. Either way it's going to have a stripe. Thanks for the links I will be looking at them real close.

Re: whats needed for a 501 caddy swap
remember, the tranny needs to have a B-O-P bellhousing to bolt up. you can use adapters, but your tranny probably wouldn't hold up very long anyways.
I would go with a TH400 and a 3.07 gear myself. The torque will tug on the 3.07 like they're nothing |

Re: whats needed for a 501 caddy swap
sorry bout the hi-jack
I have considered this swap too... and longhorn Man you say a 700r4 wont hold up? Well does the BOP 400 have a removable tailshaft to convert to 4x4 mode? I am NOT familiar with non Chevy stuff.... ok hi-jack over |

Re: whats needed for a 501 caddy swap
you can make the 700 hold up, but it won't be cheap, and some places won't even consider trying to do it. Just tell them your engine has 500 lb ft of torque, and watch there face. (some did, STOCK)
The POB 400's have the removable tailshaft, just like chevy does. |

Re: whats needed for a 501 caddy swap
After reading that I need a BOP I may reconsider. I was thinking about the adapter but then was worried that I wouldn't have enough room for between the firewall for it and I might have to move the engine to far forward. My 700r4 is pretty stout so I don't think I would have any problems with it right away but there is no telling.
I know I need to do something fast with the engine because my 350is starting to burn oil and feeling little week.

Re: whats needed for a 501 caddy swap
How thick are the adapter plates? They shouldnt cause too much of a problem with firewall interference... Right?
Don't the 500's require new/ different motormounts. |
