Manual Tranny Question

I have a line on a sm465 Which i believe is a granny low tranny. What all is involved in changing one out? I currently have a 3 speed. The tranny is free by the way all i need is a shifter. I have a high hump floorboard section as well as If i remember correctly its gonna need.

I just finished doing this myself. The 4-speed will bolt right in. You will either need a 4-speed drive shaft, or have yours changed because the slip joint on the 3-speed goes into the trans, while the 4-speed shaft has the joint in the shaft.

Did you use the same bellhousing? Do you have any pics? Did you shorten or lengthen the D-Shaft? The 465 looks shorter to me but i could be wrong. Sorry for all the questions I would just like to get all of this together before I do it.

I considered doing the nv4500 swap but this one is free and it will give me the pulling gears I want. Plus I just like a floor shifter. Gives me someplace to rest my hand. LOL

The 465 has a larger front brg. retainer. You will need a different bell housing.

I just removed my SM465, and it's heavy. 185lbs heavy. So keep that in mind when removing so the clutch isn't damaged while sliding it out or you're like me and crack the driveway.

The shifter on the trans is a funny one to remove if you haven't done it. The mounting "ball" needs to be pushed in a turned counter clockwise to remove. I piece of dowel should do the trick. You'll have to remove the long shifter before the install.

The output is usually a static yoke so you may need a completely different d-shaft to accomodate for the slip. The Transmission is shorter and I belive you'll need a "mid hump", but I may be incorrect. My truck did the swap from the 3 speed before I got it, and had a new hump installed.

You'll rarely use 1st gear, but it does come in handy from time to time. That trans can handle a 2 ton truck, so it'll feel really "torque-y"

This one dosent come with a shifter so Ill have to find one. Its sitting in a garage and i didnt see a bellhousing near by so ill have to check on that. I didnt really look real well either. Does anyone know if the starter will bolt to the bellhousing like mine currently does or will i need to put a block one on it? Does anyone have any pics of theirs?

67 and older used a 4 11/16 bearing retainer, 68 up used a 5 1/8 retainer size, just make sure they are both the same. Do not not put a tranny with a small retainer into a bell with a large hole, those parts work together to align everthing up and keep the trans centered.

Cool!! Glad to know that. Mental note!! Make sure all the holes are the same size!!

You know one could take that completely wrong now that I think about it !!!
