Trans Fluid - leaking down front driveshaft
Got some time to move some stuff around in the garage last weekend...
I was sweeping some leaves and spotted a few drips of what appeared to be trans fluid spots under the front driveshaft - I put a small bucket under it and in the past week it has put a layer of fluid in the bottom of the bucket. Any idea what this is - and could it be from just sitting all winter? I can get a pic when I get home if that helps... |

Re: Trans Fluid - leaking down front driveshaft
The seals in the transmission have probably dried up from sitting. I've heard it is a common problem with the older transmissions.

Re: Trans Fluid - leaking down front driveshaft
most of the transmission fluid in any automatic is stored in the torque converter. If you Blazer has been sitting for a long time, the converter could have drained some of the fluid into the body of the transmission. There isn't much room in the trans body, so it has to go somewhere. There is a vent on top of the body of the trans, but most all of the seals can weep some fluid. I would suggest you fire that old girl up and run it down the road. Wash off the trans, and see if the leaks come back.

Re: Trans Fluid - leaking down front driveshaft
My trans did the same thing this winter. It was down about three quarts. My rubber trans gasket leaked. When the Jimmy sits for a long time the converter drains down and pushes out the trans pan gasket. Normally fine if I run it a couple times a week. Just so happens that it leaks in the passanger front corner and drips onto the front shaft. I keep a drain pan under the shaft just for this reason.

Re: Trans Fluid - leaking down front driveshaft
If the transmission fluid is coming out from around the seal on the transfer case, then you have two problems. The transfer case is supposed to be full of 90wt. Gear Oil. What this means if the fluid is running down the driveline coming from the transfer case, you have a bad tranny to transfercase adapter seal and front yoke seal in the transfer case.
A quick way to see if this is your problem, pull the transfer case fill plug. That plug sits lower than the transmission and either mixed gear oil and tranny fluid will come out or strait transmission fluid. WES

His truck has a 350/TH350?NP203 combo. The transmission was completely rebuilt right before he bought it.
