Need help with starter - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Well when I try to start my truck, it grinds really bad!! Bad enough that I think it may be hurting my flywheel.

But it is my daily driver. Well I am going today to buy a new one and was wondering which one to get. What do you guys think? Here are my options:

Duralast-limited warranty-$50 core-Price $111.99

Valucraft-1yr warranty-$65 core-Price $129.99

If it did ruin my flywheel, what am I looking at as far as price to replace that? Its a TH400. Keep in mind that the starter for my truck is heavy duty since its Diesel and 24V.

both sound pretty steep ive never spent more than $65 for a starter with a one year warranty

I think its because of it being for a Diesel and being 24V instead of 12V.

Steve, if it was me, I'd go with the starter that carries the longer warranty (that's if I had the money).

But, since there's not really much of a difference in the prices on the two, it would be a toss-up.

NAPA has good prices and warranties on starters...check them out before you buy.

NAPA's average price for a starter for a diesel was around $165

This is there cheapest one. And it is a reman.

as far as the starter i would go with the limited lifetime warranty its cheaper and has a longer warranty.also if you didnt know it already bring the part with you that your replacing so you wont get the core charge-they will credit you that towards the order or something like that.as far as the flywheel i would think they would be the same generally speaking but then again you do have a diesel in your truck so maybe they are different i dont know.

Have you tried the local Alt. -Starter rebuild shop in your town, have yours rebuilt at least you know what you are starting with and they do more than wash and paint them and have a good parts warrenty

Wouldnt ya know it turned out to be a broken starter bolt.

$4.09 later it is starting with ease. Thanks for all the info guys.

Hey Steve!

There is supposed to be a bracket on the front of the starter that bolts from the block to the starter. This needs to be installed, if it's missing. It helps prevent broken bolts, a known problem with the 6.2L. If you don't have the bracket, run down to your local dealer and pick one up. The 6.2L is also know for actually breaking the outer bolt ear right off of the block when the bracket is missing, so you want to make sure it's there.
