Rear Disc Brakes for 72 Jimmy?

Hey Guys.

I have power brakes and front discs on my 72 Jimmy right now, but i would really like some rear disc brakes as well.
Whats the best way to go about this?

Should I Get a disc conversion or is there a certain rearend with discs already that i can swap out?

It really depends on what your after. There are several of our forum vendors that offer rear disc conversions. Some have a complete systems.

There are others who have the brackets required to mount the calipers, allowing you to build your own.

Hmm a conversion may be good. Which vendors offer them? I'm going to look at the vendor list now but a point in the right direction would be sweet!

Re: Rear Disc Brakes for 72 Jimmy?

i'd prefer to swap in the parts from a late model gm truck rather than go with aftermarket.....more straight forward for replacement parts.

only problem is that chevy only had rear disc for 6 lug and 8 lug vehicles. 2wd is 6 lug from 2000 and up. i may some day just graft in the entire rear axle from a late model truck into my 72 3/4 ton 2wd suburban. better parts all around and a nice limited slip option!

Re: Rear Disc Brakes for 72 Jimmy?

what rear end do you have? 10 or 12 bolt? On my Chevy Nova what I did was take a 10 bolt rear end with disk brakes off of a 99 Z28 and took the brakes off of it and put them on my Nova rear end. Bolts right up!! The only mod I had to do was make and weld on an emergency brake cable bracket... took like 20 min. No joke that easy. I got the whole rear end for $200 and got disk on my Nova, sold the rest of the rear and made $75 back.

Take that you expensive kit!! LOL.

Re: Rear Disc Brakes for 72 Jimmy?

You should look into the mid 90s impala/caprice. Disk brakes, limited slip and I read somewhere they are pretty close to stock width. They also have a 5x5" bolt pattern. Camaro/trans am rear ends are pretty small for a full size truck, not to mention the 5x4.75" pattern. Ford 8.8"s are also not bad, some have disk brakes and limited slip. These things are a dime a dozen. Get some new axles and your good. Youll still spend less going this way.
