oil pan off-inspection
hey, in a few days I am thinking about taking the oil pan off and taking a look at the lower end of my motor. is there anything that I can look for that will show how the motor is, health wise?

Unless you already have the engine out, or need to change the seals anyway
I don't see any reason to take it appart, if it ain't broke... Silver oil, low oil pressure, clicking, knocking and tapping are better signs of engine wear. I do however double check a few things after getting one back from a rebuilder. |

Re: oil pan off-inspection
If you're gonna have the pan off anyhow. Run a couple Plastigages around the mains and rods to check bearing wear.
That's if you REALLY wanna scare yourself. - Dave

Re: oil pan off-inspection
Check the oil pickup screen on the pump. They get deposits and sediment on them and can inhibit oil flow to the pump. Tap the pan bolt holes back to flat if the bolt holes have been pulled into the gasket. Sounds like a great time to change the timing chain, just a few more bolts to take off if you already have the pan down.

I wouldn't take it off unless you have some other reason to. You are starting a snowball.

Re: oil pan off-inspection
well I was told years ago by a old-timer mechanic that there was rod knock when it started up. just thought if you could see if that true if took the pan off. but at this point. right now I should keep it, " here no evil, see no evil". lol my plans for the future is to rebuild the motor anyway.

If you can't someone knocking at the door do you go check anyway?
There is my metaphor for the day.
