vent window seal installation - help!

I've been looking for links or threads on how to install new vent window seals on my 1970 c-10. But no luck so far.

Can someone point the way? I'm sure this is written up somewhere.

thanks
Mark

Re: vent window seal installation - help!

Geoff;

Thanks, with your instructions I am getting it done.

Another question. I got the window out of the frame. The glass itself is sandwiched in a metal channel with a rubber seal. My rubber seal is ratty looking. Can it be replaced?

thanks
Mark

No problem Mark.....

Are you talking about the metal the arrows are pointing to??

I am not sure....I *Think* you can, but I have never done it....maybe someone else will chime in here and help!

It can be replaced. Most glass shops will sell you some but it IS getting harder to find. Just be careful not to bend the frame cause they will bend.

Re: vent window seal installation - help!

Butyl edge-wrap tape, comes in different widths & thicknesses. Most glass shops have it in a BIG roll or two, or several.

The window glass is just a force-fit into the frame, which is like a U-channel, with the tape as a spacer / filler as well as a water-proofer. You clean the old broken glass & butyl out of the channel with a screwdriver, & a solvent. A touch of heat may help soften the old tape, if you're trying to take a non-broken glass out of the frame.

Believe it or not, you lay / wrap the tape on the glass edge & literally beat it into the U-channel of the metal frame which is standing vertically on edge on a workbench (or piece of soft wood like a 2 x 4 board) by hitting the glass edge (the edge away from the tape) with a rubber mallet & you drive or wedge the tape & glass down into the frame together all at once. Some soapy water helps lubricate things.

Razor blade trim-off of the excess butyl tape sticking out, neat to the metal window frame channel. That way, it doesn't matter if the tape is off-center a bit on the channel as you're driving it & the glass into place.

Done !

Sounds (& looks) brutal & "bet there's gonna be a broken glass" crazy when you see a good installer do it the first time, but that's the way it's done. Takes way more time to get the old out & the channel cleaned up than it does to put the new one in.

Geoff, yes your arrows point to what I am talking about. 68ShortStep seems to have it figured out. Maybe I'll take the windows to a glass shop and see if they can do it.

Anyone else have advice or comments?

thanks
Mark

Re: vent window seal installation - help!

Yep - I agree - great idea. Take it to a glass shop, & ask them nicely & see if they'll let you go back into the shop & watch it done. They might, if they're not over-cautious about the usual "insurance regulations prohibit customers from entering the shop." Yada, yada, BS.

Don't blink, cause it's over pretty fast. It's shocking, to see them whaling-away on the edge of a piece of glass with a mallet, but that's how they do it. At least, all I've ever seen done.

The main door glass window in our trucks also fits down into a similar metal U-channel all along at the bottom (down inside the door) with the same butyl rubber tape for holding the glass into the bottom metal retainer track. Same method is used when a door window is broken & gets replaced with new. Usually that edge tape is not as deteriorated because it never sees the sunlight, but they'll always put new rubber tape on.

Re: vent window seal installation - help!

Call me ghetto but when mine came out I used black RTV in the channel and pushed the window back in. After it dries it wont turn loose.

Re: vent window seal installation - help!

How do you remove the chrome latch from the vent window? I'd like to clean it up and lube it.

thanks

Re: vent window seal installation - help!

Hey Mark,

Sorry, I can't remember how I did this, but.....FYI....if you don't already, you might want to pick up a Factory Assembly manual....has lots of good exploded views for things like this....They are $35-$40US....check with some board vendors (click on the link in my signature and scroll down)...Hope this helps!

Re: vent window seal installation - help!

The vertical seal rivets are a pain in the butt....I used pop rivets instead and they worked great.
