carb flooding problem
i just installed an iron intake on my cheyenne because i stripped a bolt in the aluminum one and need this thing on the road. yesterday, i put the right sized jets and needless back into the carb and when i got it all buttoned up, the carb overloaded and fuel started to come out of the accelorator pump. i took the carb off and took it apart again to make sure that everything was in check and there was no debris in the needle and seat area. with everything back in place, the truck idles and drives fine, but there is a little smoke in the exhaust. how can i lean this thing out? the jets are # 71 and the needles are #45. the only thing that is changed is the intake. the truck has always had this needle and seet combination. should i lower the float level?

Re: carb flooding problem
what type of carb? Edelbrock or quadra jet, if its a Holley I'd say the floats. Prolly the same on the Edelbrocks also but not sure.

Re: carb flooding problem
They used to have a lot of trouble with Q jet floats way back when. There was a series of them that would soak up gas.
I'd still be suspicious of dirt especially if you turned the car upside down at any time. Most likely you can helicoil the alunimum intake and have it be fine. |

Re: carb flooding problem
did it have brass floats? Maybe a crack? if you took it apart. If not it sounds like the float stuck, or is out of adjustment.

Re: carb flooding problem
im sorry guys, i should have specified. its a quadrajet and it has the black plastic type float. when i took it apart, i sprayed every little orffice and pathway. i also took the seat out and cleaned that area very well too. there should not have been any debris in it the second time i put it back on. do you think that the float should be bent downward a little more?

Re: carb flooding problem
Possibly the float level got messed up, and it's taking in a little too much gas. IIRC, lowering the float level should help lean it out some.
