Unhappy Differential leak problem (I think)

69 SWB - 2WD
Truck sat for 5 years.
Help-I have fluid (wetness) all over my tailpipes, rear shocks and under the bed.
It does not appear to come from the rear cover. The rear fluid was only a pint
low, don't know how much it holds
Could it be the pinion seal and is this a easy fix for a backyard mechanic
Any instructions or suggestions?
Thanks

Re: Differential leak problem (I think)

changing the pinion seal is not to bad. it is just getting it back together correctly. if you do change the seal yourself make sure you use a torque wrench to take of the pinion nut so you can see what it was set at. the nut should go back to the same torque setting so the ring and pinion are riding in the same pattern as before you started. hopefully that makes sense.
I see you are from harpers ferry. my brother, father and I ride the c&o canal once a year. we usually stop there for dinner before setting up camp at night. one of the nicest pictures I think I have is off the mountain with that companies logo across the river from you.

Re: Differential leak problem (I think)

Thanks for the tip Saurkraut. My book said to make marks on the nut and surrounding parts to line everything back up. Maybe I will leave this job to my mechanic so that I am not buying a rear end.
Harpers Ferry is a beautiful area. I moved here about 8 years ago. I always wanted to do the C&O canel thing, I understands it goes on forever.
Thanks again
