Gloveboxes and geometry..... it's fascinating

Someone want to tell me how to get this new glovebox in the damn hole?

I know I have to take the door off but it seems to be bigger than the freakin dash and I have A/C with new ductwork to deal with.

Re: Gloveboxes and geometry..... it's fascinating

There are two different style of glove boxes...one without air and one with. Maybe thats the problem? Id have to see a pic of what you have.

Its been awhile since I put one in but I do remember it being a bit of a hassle...this one was without air.

Re: Gloveboxes and geometry..... it's fascinating

I have the one for A/C so it's the correct box, it's just bigger than the opening and with A/C boxes behind it, I can't maneuver much. I'll get a pic of it.

Re: Gloveboxes and geometry..... it's fascinating

I just replaced mine(non AC). I used the tried and true man mentality, if it don't fit, force it.
Really. It will push through the hole, but it will not go in from underneath, I even removed most of the heater box assembly.
After filling all the screw holes and replacing the door it is as sturdy and solid as can be.

That may be my only option but it sure doesn't seem to be very flexible.

Make sure you insert the left side first and push towards the radio. Don't over-do it to where you disconnect any of the ac vent hoses. Then you just have to massage it in there being careful not to rip the cardboard. This method is assuming your ac vent hoses are in the original positions.

Re: Gloveboxes and geometry..... it's fascinating

Been years since I did mine (A/C) and yes it is too big to fit, but it will go. Seems like I had to bent the box a bit and have a beer or two. Don't think there's a trick, just show it who's the boss!

If it's supposed to bolt down beneath the hinge for the door then why wouldn't you take the door off anyway?

Yeah I installed new ductwork yesterday and it's all in the factory locations. The box is so deep though I don't think I can put either side in first. It has to go in the hole straight.

Re: Gloveboxes and geometry..... it's fascinating

If you have a nice painted dash, tape up the edges around the glove box opening in the dash and just push it in. Once it's pushed in, you push it "past" the metal edges, the box "pops out" and you should then be able to pull it back towards the dash to install the screws.

When I installed my Vintage Air supplied plastic dash I tilted it in, then pushed in and up.

Re: Gloveboxes and geometry..... it's fascinating

Yeah, mine is totally different than that. I have the factory blower box and ductwork and the original style glovebox so it won't go in that way. But thx for the tape idea. I'll have to remember that.

Re: Gloveboxes and geometry..... it's fascinating

you just shuish it down and force it in//easier to do with glove door and hinge off
if all else fails just outthink it

Re: Gloveboxes and geometry..... it's fascinating

I've got the same situation. My dashboard is so pretty and nice I'd hate to scratch it. I was considering removing some of the staples to help fold the cardboard more, and then figure out a way to reattach it. Yeah, it's like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.

Re: Gloveboxes and geometry..... it's fascinating

I just did mine, and spent a half hour hemming an hawing with, till I just got aggressive and manhandled it in starting with one side like chip72 said. I figured they were inexpensive enough I could just buy another. Surprisingly it didn't seem to hurt it or even bang the edges up. I have the A/C too with new hoses and such.

If you really want to do something difficult try taking OUT a nice original brittle 36 year old one.

Re: Gloveboxes and geometry..... it's fascinating

I bought a new cardboard one from CI about 2 years ago and with a little shoving, managed to get it to fit in there good. Just hope that you don't have to take it out to get to the blower motor relay behind it. Mine has been taken out twice and I need another one already.

bottom line: getting it in is the easy part, taking it out is a lot harder. You really have to get rough with it sometimes. but it takes abuse pretty well for being cardboard

I have A/C

EDIT: Its a lot easier to do with the glovebox door off

Re: Gloveboxes and geometry..... it's fascinating

I remember the day I got mt new Glove box with A/C then sat scratching my head wondering how in the hell I was going to get it in. But as has already been said it's just a matter of being a bit forcefull with it and if I remmber correctly I put the deep end of the box in first as far back as it would go then slightly bent the outer edges of the left side to get it passed the dash and as I was doing that I would pull the right side of the box forward and into place, all with the door off.

Re: Gloveboxes and geometry..... it's fascinating

yes, the glove box liner defies standard logic of smaller part A fits in larger hole B.

but once you've installed it, you get it.

however, it does take a bit of squishing and cussing......

Re: Gloveboxes and geometry..... it's fascinating

Im sure by now (11 months later) you have gotten this in Ha!!, i just wanted to say i have the cardboard one and slid it in, left side first, from under the dash far right side, up over the blower box with the Glove box door still on, it could have even been closed if i didnt need to see what i was doing. there was no way it would have fit thru the front, not with the inside, top left corner of the dash having that odd shaped protruding tab. anyway apparently everyone here just shoved it thru i feel like im the only one that said hmmm... this must end up in the back so how about starting from the back

You must have a non a/c truck. I couldn't get it up from the bottom of the dash but it did go in through the front without damaging it believe it or not.

Re: Gloveboxes and geometry..... it's fascinating

I did one the other day - an A/C glovebox that I bought from Jim Carter. It seemed to be impossible until I took out the right-side defroster hose. Then I put the glove box in left side first, pushed it as far forward and to the left as it would go, pushed in the right side until it lined up with the screw holes and loosely put in one screw to hold it. Then I gently grabbed the edge of the left side with a pair of pliers and pulled it back until it was in position. A pain, but it works.
