Brake light problem/???

Anybody have any suggestion on this one ? I have tail lights when I pull the headlight switch on the dash. No brake lights. I changed the brake light switch at the pedal. I changed the brake light fuse. I also smoothed the side marker lights front and back, taped each wire individually on the side markers so not to contact each other. Any info would be appreciated. I'll probably use a tester today when i get off work. Gonna check the switch receptacle to see if there is 12 volts at the switch.

check your grounds at each of the rear lights, sounds like your loosing ground and the circuit in question is going the other to complete the circuit.

I just had a similar problem. I was hardly getting any current to my right rear brake light but both tail lights worked fine. It turned out to be my turnsignal switch. Now my tail lights and brake lights are brighter than ever and work perfect.

Have you checked for power at the fuse and the brake light switch with a test light? If you have power at those points then I would start looking at the signal switch, assuming you replaced the rear 1157 bulbs. Does the emergency flashers work?

You have a good ground, other wise (99% of the time) the tail lamps would be out too.
You need to trace the wires.
Being that neither one works, (asuming that both your turn signals work) odds are that the problem will be in the turn signal switch, or at the brake light switch...or not getting power to the switch.

thanks for the info folks. i do not have turn signals or emergency flashers. with my working hours lately, i'll probably have to wait til the weekend to check out the fuse and switch power. i remember several months back that i was trying to get the blinkers to work and i messed up the circuit on the back of the dash only where the indicator flashers are. the blinkere were working at one time. i didnt realize that they were all tied together.
