Why my truck hasn't been touched - landscaping
So it seems like everyone in Central PA like to purchase a truckload of mulch every spring and place it around every tree, bush and lightpole. I bought into the norm when I moved in three years ago and spent about $400-500 on mulch. As soon as I was finished my wife says "we should have just placed rock down like our old house" Thanks dear, should have mentioned that earlier...
So now that the mulch needed replaced and weeded (actually needed it last year) we decided to go for the rock. I might cost more but it will never have to be replaced. I'm almost done with 7 tons and will probably need another 2 to finish. Now all I have to do is get Roundup to hit the weeds! NO MORE MULCH!!!!! except around my trees Yesterday I made the turn and am finishing the back today..

Sweet! Reminds me of senior estates.
It should last a long time, did you lay down a geotextile fabric? Granted it's not in a traffic area, but it helps keep the rock from disappearing into the dirt. Looks good. |

Re: Why my truck hasn't been touched - landscaping
my personal experience with rock is not good. granted the fabric keeps the weeds from coming through but after 2 or 3 years it gets full of dirt and weeds grow in that. then on year 4 you get mad and switch back to mulch while trying to figure out what to do with the rock. also I have found that rock tends to overheat the ground cover. but then mulch is more inviting to pests giving them a nice cozy path to your foundation.

Re: Why my truck hasn't been touched - landscaping
This rock is pretty light colored, I touched it the other day and it was cooler than the concrete sidewalk... I'll spray Roundup all day long if I don't have to touch mulch! At least it won't blow away and decay... just to be replaced again!

Re: Why my truck hasn't been touched - landscaping
Mike,
I don't know how I missed this thread. I thought this forum was for imports and such. The yard looks good. I'm at the same point with our landscaping as well. The wife wants to put down "lava" rock this year instead of the traditonal mulch. It was hard for us in the past to have any nice landscaping because our labs would dig everything up. We found them a new home last September so this year the yard will have a chance.

Re: Why my truck hasn't been touched - landscaping
the rock is so much cleaner than the mulch.. we are still doing mulch around the trees and some remote bushes but never again around the house!

I here you!
houses are like hotrods, THey are never done. I used a bit more ROCK, but this is what I have been working on this last couple weeks. It could use more plants, but I can only spend so much time on it at once without getting burnt the heck out. Bill Last edited by heidesign; 06-02-2009 at 01:01 PM. |

Not a bad idea but I just signed up for a few more years. Right now I'm a 63b, but I just started putting my warrant packet together. Gonna go rotary wing so I can grow up to be just like you!

Re: Why my truck hasn't been touched - landscaping
nice looking landscaping. the wife and I disagree on our projects, she just wants to mow around something, and I want to plan out what I want, and build it rigth.. we are mowing around "poppies" that only bloom once a year! once somehow she thought a pumpkin was growing wild in the yard, had to mow around it all summer, and it never come up to anything!
