Cross over - steering box

Which 2WD steering box should I use for my cross over kit on my 1972 GMC Jimmy?

72 GMC Jimmy, 350, sm465 np205 (getting a face lift)
64 Nova SS, 327 SC & gassed, TH350. (blowed it up)
84 HD FX frame,80 FL tins, evo with 85hp/90tq (wifes bike)
96 HD FatBoy evo with 102hp/100tq (mine!)

You can use any '69-'87 C10 steering box. Just be sure to get one that has the same style fittings as your current pump has. In around 1981 oer so they switched to metric fittings with O-rings instead of the double flare.

You could always change the fitting on the back of the pump to match whatever high pressure hose you have coming off the steering box.

The mid 70s boxes and newer went to a closer ratio( fewer turns lock to lock), these are the ones I like, it makes these trucks feel more sporty and less like a dump truck.

All you need is the sector shaft out of a 2wd box.
No need to replace the whole box.

Yes, the later years have a faster ratio, which is nice.

But with crossover everything is a new calculation, ie lengh of pitman arm, length of arm on axle, box, sector shaft, new or old box.

Once you go crossover you'll wonder why you took so long to make the change.
I've always said it "be carefull letting your friends or girlfriends drive your truck after the conversion" it will turn fast and sharp and if your not REALLY used to a big tall truck, funny things could happen.

And then there is cross-over w/High steer and Hydro Assit

Moves the Tie-rod up high out of the way (black) crossover is green.
Wheeling in the rocks with crossover can be a b**th to steer so the Hydro makes for one finger steering

Tapped 2wd gearbox to work the hydro

This is true, but first you would need the fitting and the most likely place to get one is another pump. I was just trying to save the OP one more thing to do....

Do you know how many turns lock to lock they are compared to the early ones?

I bought the kit from PSC (hydro assit) (crossover/highsteer came from WFO) but there are many ways to gather up pieces and save money. The cool thing about PSC kit is the parts match, Ram, PS pump & Gearbox so I decided to save up and buy the kit and doit all at once and never have to mess with it again. Sometimes when you piecemill stuff togeather your allways messing with it..at least that has been my experiance. Over the years I got tired of doing things twice/three times to get it right...


By the way if you have crossover and a locker up front, steering in 4x4 mode can get hmmm..less than smooth or just plain bad = hang on. before I installed Hydroassit I had to switch from 4x4 to 2x4 when I drove at any speed higher than second gear. I HIGHLY recomend Hydroassit if you plan on running a locker up front w/crossover = one finger steering

With a cross over steering set up, stabilizers are not really needed any more.

Lots of companies selling sets, first round I used ORD and the 2nd version I went with Ballistic Fab.
There's allows the spring to be deleted, hence no more death wobble.
(if your running a D60)

Later model boxes offer a closer ratio steering rate and are considered more desirable box but I'm not sure what year the input shaft changes.

No worries...

So anyway where would I get a sector shaft and the needed seals to replace the 4wd sector shaft.

Oh and I'm going with high steer as well ;-)
