Another Siding Job:Historic

I got a call yesterday from an architect I have done work for in the past.I went straight down to have a look at the job.It`s in historic Ellicott City,MD.It`s a colonial mill town on the Patapsco River and literally built right into the bedrock of a side valley leading into the big river valley.It`s also the city(town)where the race with the tom Thumb locomotive vs the horse commenced.In`73 Hurrican Agnes seriously flooded this lower end with the river up to just under the tracks on the bridge over the Old National Pike.This building was cheaplt renovated in`74 a year after Agnes and a year prior to the Historic Landmark act was implemented.The work just didn`t hold up and the place is now being totally gutted and renovated.i`ll be stripping the clapboards and exposing the framing.I`ll install 1/2" plywood,Tyvek,new windows,and new sidind.All approved by the historic commission.I`ll be covering or closing the sidewalk and working off a 60' man-lift to keep it mobile and clear for weekend tourism.I`ll be starting in a few weeks and am eager to begin.I REALLY needed this work.I just hope they don`t hang me up with pre-finishing the material.

You should see the back.Inside the back room the floor steps up about 3 feet(crawlspace).That floor is torn out and it`s because there`s a big boulder inside.there`s a triangle shaped concrete step in the corner they wanted busted out.Me and the general contractor (known him long time) both advised against opening that can of worms.We are sure it`s part of that boulder under there.The back foundation is built right off the boulders.Been that way for about 200 years.The whole town is granite.Look up those steps between the builings(3rd pic).That`s the house behind it on the next street.
I`ll get some pictures out back and inside.Also pictures with bare rame,sheathing,and other "during" shots.
All I can say about this town,women sure like to shop there.A painful thought for me.

I have no old buildings like that around here.. I am amazed at the foundation blocks and how big they are .. Can you tell me anything Tim on how they were made and put into place ?
Great job for you to show off your skills ,,wish I was there with you .. I have always liked working on something so different that is once in a life time .. I will be sure to check in and see the progress on this job you are doing ..

It matters alot to me to get jobs that have a specialness to them,like this one.Throughout the Patapsco River Valley is alot of granite.There are quarries,old & new.The old towns are full of granite buildings.These stones were all cut under water-power.The old Ellicott Mills building was moved across the road in the`90s.I couldn`t believe it.It`s located across the river and there is still today a modrn operating flour mill.It was in the center of the river back in`73 during Hurricane Agnes.I`ll get more pictures of buildings in and around there.It`s a really special little town you`d never know was right there near Baltimore.

Wow now there's a blast from the past
I proposed marriage to my wife in the restaurant next door back on 1987
It had a different name then I think but we sat at a table in the front window
and I think everyone in the restaurant knew it was coming but her

Weird part is I just spoke to her and she and her new fiancee are getting hitched friday in a small ceremony
All ended well between us and we've been friends and have two teenage girls

Hey Mark,that`s too cool! It would have been Cocao Lane back then,too.It`s been that since the late-70s.There used to be live music upstairs around the back.There was a patio outside where you could party,too.

Cocoa lane was our favorite place. Funny hadn't thought about that place in a
long time . kept me a awake last night going through some old memories
Glad to see it hasn't changed Ellicot or Cocoa lane .it is a great little town

Ironic in so many ways - we ended up leaving Maryland and moving to Cocoa
Florida in 1990

My Maternal side of the family were good solid Sctch/Irish stone massons and did a lot of stone foundations (before concrete was readily available!) Emlington, PA has streets that look just like that, my Great, great, great (maybe 3-4 greats!) built the walls around the cemetary and many of the foundations and walls around town and they are all still there!


Moreover, I am glad some work has come your way!! The economy is ICKY and work is tough to come by, it was a year or two ago for you and is much worse I am sure now, glad it has come your way!! BTW you better gat a "BIG" ladder, that is a tall MOFO!! Thanks for the picts!!

I`d like to only do historic preservation.I guess it`s the restorer in me.I love old stuff.
For those who know the area,how about oella across the river?I love driving through there.

Love that area, I used to drive my camaro drown river rd. on the other side of
that railroad bridge. It's a great road for a 5spd.

Question for ya.
Where do you get wood siding from. My house is over 100 yrs old and in the past I could only find it at the cedar mill in Glen Burnie. I hate buying expensive cedar just to paint over it.

Reisterstown Lumber Co. should have it,just north of town of Rt 30 on right.

Those are two near you I can think of.Call first.They are both still real lumber companies.
