1970 SM465 2wd usable in a 4x4?

Will a SM465 from a 2wd be usable in a 4x4? I am looking to get one incase the one in my blazer goes, but it's from a 2wd.

Also, how hard is it to remove? I've never removed one before.

ill make you a deal... if you have the right adapters to go to the T-case then it should. GM used the 465 from the factory. look for one with the T-case stilll on it

Re: 1970 SM465 2wd usable in a 4x4?

The problem is that the 2wd trans had a different output shaft on it than the 4wd. IIRC the 2wd has a 35 spline and the 4wd has a 10 spline output. Not hard to change if you have the know how.
Some good info here- http://www.4wheeloffroad.com/brandpa...ild/index.html

You could also go to a divorced transfer case but that would be a lot of work - I'd just get a 4wd SM465 - they are cheap and pretty plentiful.

Re: 1970 SM465 2wd usable in a 4x4?

yeah, I was looking at this one because it's in a C20 here and would have only been $50. Mine is in good shape, but it'd never hurt to have a spare. I'll just wait a bit and see if I can find a 4x4 one.

Thanks

Re: 1970 SM465 2wd usable in a 4x4?

$50 is a great deal. I'd buy it for that. But if you make even minor attempts at maintenance, it will last just about forever. My Jimmy's SM465 has more than 350,000 miles on it now. I've changed the fluid once and the clutch once. It's pretty hard to tear one up in a pickup truck or SUV. Plenty of 2 1/2 ton trucks, school buses and UPS trucks use them so you can see what they can take.
