Rear brake shoes pics

Well I figured I would post some pics of my new brake shoes, rebuilt wheel cylinders, and newly painted backing plate. The wheel cylinders boots were tore on both sides so you can imagine how messy it was as well as the axle seal was leaking so I replaced it also. Somehow I manage to make more work out of something quick. The backing plate was just screaming for a wire wheel and new paint

Looking good!. I've got to do my 1/2ton soon. Looking for front drums right now (six bolt). Cylinders leaking as well. Some fun ahead.

Thanks, now my rear end needs some paint It looks nasty. Well at least for you, the 1/2 ton parts are a little cheaper. At least the wheel cylinders are for sure.

I just did my 1/2 ton today. I went to buy the rebuild kit for my cylinders they wanted $15.00 for it or $20.00 for new cylinders. I went with the new cylinders. same thing with front calipers $25.00 for the rebuild kit or $32.00 for new. Its funny how they do that.

My front brakes cost me $30 or so, and my rear brakes were $40 with a $6.50 core charge. I figured front pads were cheaper than rear shoes, but I guess not in this case. New drums for my truck were priced at $100 Thanks goodness mine were good enough to get turned one more time.

I learned the hard way too. I tore off the upper & lower trim on my truck thinking it was garbage. The only think wrong with it was the wood grain was a little faded. Now I wish I had it back

It's been about 7 years since I had to do mine,but shouldn't there be a primary and a secondary shoe each of different lengths? I just checked the GM factory manual and it too show two different sizes installed on the self-adjusting brakes.
On your pic it looks like they are exactly the same.

They are the same. At least thats what I was given. I still have the truck up on stands so I will check it out. All 4 shoes I received were the same size. I appreciate the heads up. I was going to get it out of the garage today for a test drive, but with the Nascar all star race, and 100+ temp. out here, it didnt happen

Turlock to here & back is a pretty long haul.
Maybe should stay overnight. And if you wanted to do some brakes before heading home.....................

I am not sure about the trip in July. Was today the get together in Atwater ? I get glued to the couch for Nascar races, so I hope its tomorrow I just learned that I need the factory assembly manual thanks to Workinglonghorn he pointed out to me my brakes are incorrectly installed. You still want me to work on your brakes The actual shoe it the same length, but the brake pad itself is shorter on two of the pads. I got some work to do now, I can guarantee I wont make that rookie mistake again ! WorkingLonghorn, I owe you ! Does it show if the shorter pad goes towards the cab, or towards the rear ? Thanks

As long as you make the mistake(s) on your truck, I got no problems.
Short shoe goes to the front.

Yeah, today was Atwater. I didn't make it because I was leaving Sunnyvale, heading for home, about the same time I should have been in Atwater.
I suppose I could have headed to Atwater from Sunnyvale, but then the decision would have come down to "visiting truck guys, or buying groceries."
The groceries won, overwhelmingly.

If I make that mistake again, I shouldnt be working on any type of vehicle, not even r/c cars ! I will swap the shoes, and will remember that for next time.

As much as you post recipes in the gourmet section, I wouldnt expect you to drive that far

You should be able to walk into any parts store and buy 6 lug drums. The suck, and you are better off finding some old drums that are still thick. The new ones don't have the groove for the spring that goes around them, no hole to adjust the shoes, and they are made of crappy metal that wears very fast.

If you plan on keeping that HO52 for the long run, you may want to go buy those. Ask anyone with an HO72 why I say that. Ours was discontinued like 15 years ago, and they are all gone now. Junk yard only. I always recomend NOT turning drums on these old trucks unless it is NEEDED. Warping or grooves. The more metal you remove, the sooner they'll be no good.

Your work looks great. Did you put the dab of grease on the backing plate where the shoes rub? Sounds crazy, but it is a very good idea.
I like painting my backing plates with POR15, it is ver hard and the shoes slide on it eaily... plus the stuff holds up better than any paint would.

I had the rotors turned because they were a little warped. My old brake shoes were really tweeked. You could see they were thinner towards the bottom than the top. I luckily have a spare set of drums on my c20 trailer that I can use in the future if needed. Thanks for the heads up. I actually did rub some grease on the backing plate where the brake shoes rub. I thought at first that I had them on wrong, as I didnt notice that when removing them. I took them off and put them back on, and figured thats just how they sit. I figured they would rub it to bare metal over time so I used some all purpose grease. I also a real thin layer of grease where the backing plate meets the axle tube. The paint I used was cheap RustOleum high heat ultra
$5.00 a can. If I had more time to burn, I would powdercoat the backing plate but for now the paint will be fine.

6 Bolt Drums are hard to find here. I got some OEM AC DELCO "brand new" from old stock. They were $105/drum but they were made in Canada at least. Wheel cylinders and shoes are all made in China.
