gen lll in k series?
Ok, I am getting ready for a resto on my 70 k20. It has a sm465 and np205 combo, but I don't have a motor yet. Recently I have been thinking about a 6.0 litre conversion. I want an overdrive trans and rebuilding a 1st gen (383 stroker) will cost more than a used 5.3 or 6.0 genlll. I need to do some homework on this, but have no idea where to start. LS1tech maybe?
My question is, has anyone done this swap with a k series? I am sure someone here has but came up short with a search. I am interested in what was done about the transfer case and transmission. I think it may be harder to find a newer 5 speed tranny (t56?) than an automatic. i would like to stay with a standard trans. What will I need for this swap? I have no idea what the newer transfer case is called even! Any links or info would be appreciated. chas

Re: gen lll in k series?
We are half way through a 6.0/4L65 swap in a 1972 K10. We used a 2003 Silverado SS as the donor truck for the motor and trans. We kept the NP205, for its durability and manual shifting and avoided the weaker, newer transfer case. There are a lot of other issues we ran into with the Gen III motor in this build. I would be happy to share them with you. I f you have specific questions, let me know.

Re: gen lll in k series?
thanks azsmokey, checked out your thread, hey how about some updates?
way cool project there. How did the NP205 torque mount and cross member fit with the 4l65? Did you have to drill new holes in the frame? New cross member? Looks like a ton of work! I would love to drop in an LQ9 but with the six speed 6l80 trans! nice. I would need to change the reluctor or get a newer 07/08 year engine. Its expensive! So I think its going to be a 5.3 for me, cheaper to buy and I want good fuel economy for a driver, the 6.0 is a gas hog, at least it was in my 05 2500HD.
