on old hot rods they used kitchen cuboard handles.... what about that.. heres a quick pic on paint... not the best but you get the idea...

Re: custom grill idea?

I recall someone did something similar on a Chevy. Depending on what and how you are building the truck, it could look OK but the whole truck would need to be done in the right style.

I think this pic might give you an idea.

Re: custom grill idea?

It doesn't look good in MS paint. Few things do. Find a cheap scrap grille and go to work. Find a way to make it look good. That is exactly what I intend to do soon. I don't have an exact direction yet, but some ideas floating around in my mind. I am either going to build something right from scratch or find something on another vehicle to build around. It doesn't matter if everyone likes it, negative feedback will always exist. Find an idea you like and run with it. I can understand the purist's point of view, but it isn't what all of us are after.

The bottom line is once you've seen a GMC, you have pretty much seen 'em all. There is nothing setting them apart like the Chevrolets except subtle differences. We have SFA as far as doing something a little different, and there is nothing aftermarket for us. Time to fabricate! You start and I'll follow your lead.

Thumbs up Re: custom grill idea?

Have you seen these in the LMC Catalog? Still debating on whether to get some or not?

Re: custom grill idea?

I say cut it up. Most guys on this board talk about custom but just buy whatever bolts on. That's been done.

I think you should go for the quad headlight look and build something. Don't use the billet inserts!

Move the turn signals as well.

I never even thought of moving the turn signals, but that is definately worth considering. I can't wait until I have a shop to work in and my welder wired up....

Re: custom grill idea?

I recently saw a chrome specialist on the TV show "My Classic Car" who plated plastic pieces as well as metal. It got me thinking what the stock 71-72 Chevy grille would look like if it was chrome plated.

I like my truck's body to look stock but have some subtle custom touches. Has anybody seen a 71-72 Chevy grill with chrome plating? Here's the link to Pauls Chrome http://www.paulschrome.com/index.htm

Re: custom grill idea?

I'm glad to hear you are going for it. If you are planning on painting the rest of the grill, I think it would be worth considering finding a way to make the slanted edges on the inside of the grill (at the top and bottom beside the headlights) straight so that it will meet up better with your design......basically the way the chev is above. I'll attach a picture so you can see what I mean.
