Got the big powdercoating oven today- pics inside
I had my buddy at the Fire Department build it for me.
Inside dimesnions are 6 feet deep, 4 feet high, and 2 feet wide. Outside dimensions are a lot bigger. We wrapped it in plastic and duct tape since it has been rainy lately. I didn't want the insulation to get wet. I've been laying low a bit lately to get my shop redone on the inside to be more efficient and to get some work done on my own junk. I'm about to hit it full speed ahead again soon and will re-up my vendor's status when I do.

Well if it was built by a firefighter it should be safe. What have you been using for baking the coating on?

I've been using a 36 inch oven up till now. I will still use it on everything that will fit in it.

Interesting that they used the knobs & rheostat controllers (??? if that's what they are - I'm not a electrician) off of what looks like a regular household oven. Time-tested for functionality.
First powdercoating oven I ever saw was a scratch-built big-'un about 8 ft x 20 ft x about 7 ft high, & they had built a control panel that looked almost exactly like that. They powder coated & rolled the items into & out of it on old overhead meat plant hanging rails & trolley hooks (all metal) with everything hung on small wire for continuous conductivity / charge to keep the powder on the parts. They did bunches of patio furniture & car frames & boat trailers in theirs. Very Rube Goldberg rigged-up looking design, but it worked. Yours looks really cool & well made. Congrats !!! |

Re: Got the big powdercoating oven today- pics inside
That's exactly why we used the household stuff. It is dead reliable and easily replacable. There is no need to use anything else. The thermostat controls a high amperage contactor which does the heavy duty switching duties for the element's amperage.
It's basically a relay the size of a rubiks cube. The controller and thermostat run on 110 and control the contactor that switches the 220 load for the elements. There is nothing on this oven that I cannot get on any weekend day from someplace here in DFW area. Nothing is special order.

Re: Got the big powdercoating oven today- pics inside
I got it unloaded and set up into the shop this morning. It's running now to burn off any oil or contaminates inside and to also allow me to callibrate the temperature.
I've got a big piece of scrap iron inside being heated. I check the temperature every 30 minutes with my infared thermometer. That way, I can determine exactly what setting produces 350 degrees and which gives 400 degrees. You can't ever trust a thermostat. We sure enough put enough wattage inside of this thing. Good night it gets very hot, very fast. Much more powerful than I am used to.

All I can say is that it's a good thing I don't live near you, because you would take a lot of my money. That thing looks cool.
