Center Dump Ram Horns - starter issues?

Just swapping over to the 2.5" center dump manifolds on a 70 2WD LWB (SBC 350) and eyeballing it from below will there be starter issues (I have the stock style starter on it)? Looks close - don't want heat soak issues either...

Any advice on what options I have here. Trying to get my exhaust buttoned up this week (so if I need a replacement - I am looking to get it local - or shipped quickly - )

Thanks.

Re: Center Dump Ram Horns - starter issues?

On Sweet Pea I had the same issues...The bend seemed to be more of and angle than I wanted to deal with.OR buy a Mini Starter.......So I scrapped the idea...From what I have heard the center dumps will work on a 2wd ,with some modifications....but are more suited for a 4wd..........Good Luck.......

Like bad6772 said, gear drive starter. Should cure the clearance "and" heat soak problems...

Re: Center Dump Ram Horns - starter issues?

Anybody got a part number for a starter they have used (or something I can pick up at the junkyard)?

I dont know if this will help but i think it might...My 1964 327 has a flywheel mounted starter and judging by the placemnt it would solve your problem cause it had stock center dump rams on it originally..It came out of a 64' Impala SS

Re: Center Dump Ram Horns - starter issues?

I picked up a 3HP mini starter from Skip White on Ebay - should have it here tomorrow or Thursday.

Anything I should know about moving over to a mini starter or tips on the R&R?

I just bolted mine up and was good to go. I don't know if any of them need shims or not. Mine didn't...

Do you have a link to the guy selling the mini starters on ebay, I'm after one myself and want to buy from someone reccomended rather than end up with a load of junk.

Thanks

Plenty of people on this forum have bought the HEI from him without an issue so I am going to try his mini starter.

Ebay UserID = skipwhite

Re: Center Dump Ram Horns - starter issues?

Thanks guys, I need to find out shipping costs to the UK from him but even with the crappy exchange rates its way less that I've been quoted for a 2hp one from UK suppliers.

Re: Center Dump Ram Horns - starter issues?

Haven't used the mini starter, but yes, I too had starter issues with the ram horns. I cured mine by adding a $5 heat shield (and also replacing the starter for the third or fourth and so far final time). Ever since I added the new starter and heat shield (at the same time) I haven't had any issues at all, even after an almost 3 hour drive to TN. Started right back up, it used to be that anything over 20 minutes of driving and it wouldn't start for an hour to two after.

Let us know how the mini works out.
