Exhausting

Got the K5 loaded up last night and off to the exhaust shop today.

When I originally purchased the K5 it had a normal ram horn on the driver's side and a log style later model manifold on the passenger side with some nasty old exhaust and glass packs.

I purchased a pair of 2.5" ram horns a while ago and finally got the painted and mounted Monday night. Going with 2.5" exhaust to a pair of Flowmaster Super 40's - I won one of them a few years ago on a different website. (Did get a call a little while ago from the exhaust shop stating the center out, offset out won't work very well so going with proper ones)

Here is the K5 getting ready to go in.

Interested to see how it sounds, minus the old exhaust leaks and glass packs

Re: Exhausting

It's real close. I had a pair of headman headers, It was about 1/4 inch of clearance to the frame rails. Now I got a pair of Doug Thorley headers not much better.

Re: Exhausting

I think if there the shorty headers, they will fit better, and easier to change the last two spark plugs.

Re: Exhausting

You've been thread-jacked Yukon.

To get back on track, you having them do an 'X' or 'H' pipe?

I run 40's also on my crawler coming from a set of 2.5 rams, enjoy brother!

Re: Exhausting

Awesome Mark. Glad to see more work on the Blazer! What a great site your trucks are movin' down the road. Get that top off for the summer!

Oh, and get a lower ball mount! You need that trailer level so it doesn't try and lift the back tires of your truck off the ground if you have to really mash the brakes!

Re: Exhausting

Got the K5 home last night and I'm pretty happy with the sound. I'm surprised by how different it sounds than the Dynomax Ultraflo's that I have on the K20's bbc. The Ultraflo's were supposed to be pretty aggressive but they are pretty tame compared to the Super 40's. Drove the K5 in the city but not the highway but felt the exhaust was not at all too loud, which I did want to avoid.

Here's a short audio clip

Re: Exhausting

Mark,

That's some nice vintage steel. The mufflers sound good. I plan on putting Super 40's on my K10 as well and that's the "sound" I'm hoping for on mine.

Re: Exhausting

Thought I'd throw up a few pics of the exhaust. The ram horns are 2 1/2" repo corvette manifolds that I cleaned up a bit and then sprayed with high temp exhaust manifold paint. Will be interesting to see if the paint lasts. I used the recommended primer also but I usually have poor luck with paint lasting, so we will just have to see how it does.

Ignore the zip ties, haven't had time to work the plug wires to keep them off the manifolds.

The exhaust is 2 1/2" and lead to the Flowmasters.

The left muffler looks close to the driveshaft but that is more the angle of the pic than an actual problem.

Worked out well that I went to take these pics as I found the left rear shock was just about to work its way off the shock mount and the other side was loose too. Guess I need to be checking some nuts. I'm a little surprised the exhaust guy didn't notice and let me know of those two problems.

I didn't even think about getting my factory gas tank skid plate reinstalled before the exhaust went on, hopefully there is no interference!

Re: Exhausting

Yukon, did the ram horns fit with no trummin on the engine crossmember? Curious for myself, as the driverside factory ram on my 72 was angled toward the rear.

Re: Exhausting

Sounds good,looks good too.

The DynoMax are a much more mellow, deeper toned muffler than the Flowmaster's.

How did your trailer set-up tow?
Looks like you could have used about a 2-4" drop hitch.

I sure like the look of those knobby, skinny tires on the old K5.

Re: Exhausting

72blue, the ram horns fit with no trimming of the crossmember - these are the same side ram horns, but I can't remember at the moment if they are passenger side or driver side manifolds.

Bobby, you are definitely right about needing a bit more of a drop for the trailer ball. I have a trailer that is really tall that fits my existing hitch but it isn't a vehicle trailer so I borrowed my buddies that you see here - definitely need to invest in a drop hitch bar.

The K20 tows very nicely but I can not wait to swap in the Dana 60 so I can have disk brakes up front rather than the drums. I give myself plenty of room to brake but always worry about someone pulling in front of me and having to stop faster than normal.

I dig those old tires on the K5 also, have a very classic look to them. The main problem is they are fairly old, always been inside but it still worries me that they are old. I bought the 69 K20 with these tires and rims on it and that was in 1999 or 2000 and the tires had been on the truck for probably 10 years - basically brand new but old tires.

Re: Exhausting

Here's an old post that discusses where I think I got these along with a couple other sources - I can't recall if the left hand or right hand ones are the ones you want - PICKMUP has a great old for sale post about these manifolds and which ones to buy for the 67-72 4x4.

Re: Exhausting

I think they sound pretty good, nice idle and I'm eager to get the top pulled to hear how that sounds also.

I'm very pleased that driving at 55 mph with the hard top doesn't have any bad resonance, definitely not obnoxiously loud at any speed.

The other thing I'm really digging is now I can have the windows rolled down and I'm not drawing in tons of exhaust - having the pipes exit on the sides rather than straight back makes a world of difference!

Re: Exhausting

I had heard that rear exit made it draw. Glad to hear that side exit clears that up. Thats the same way I'm running mine. Just need to finish putting it all together. Looks great YJ!!

Re: Exhausting

YJ, looks really good. I don't see an "H" pipe connecting the two sides. Any reason you didn't include one with the new exhaust. I'm just curious, kind of on the fence if I should put one in when I redo my exhaust.
