Transmission problems?

Alright, so we got my 87 Sierra fired up today and the engine worked great. However, when you put it in gear and give it gas, all it does is creep forward. And not just in Drive, in Reverse and Neutral too. The engine revs up, but all the truck does is creep forward realllly slow. Also, the guy we bought it from said it had just quit working on him one day with no noise or anything, so we don't think it's the rear end gone out. Anyone have any ideas or possible solutions? And if anyone cares it's a 700R4 in a 3/4 ton.

HELLO,definitely not a tranny guy but it was mine,pull pan,drain,refill to proper level.if that dont do it i would say tranny is shot but not rear end problem.dont know anything about the 700r4 maybe someone else has better idea but thats where i would start.especialy if it has set for awhile.good luck

I just rebuilt my engine. When we fired everything up the same thing was happening. We started the truck and shifted through the gears and kept adding fluid. After a few cycles of this the transmission was starting to engage. Not sure if its the same situation for yours but its a thought.

That's what slipping is.

If you rebuilt an engine and reinstalled a transmission, it will do that because you need to pump fluid into the torque converter which drains fluid from the transmission.

Once the converter is full, adding additional fluid will fill your transmission up to the correct level as long as you don't overfill.

Also, make sure your cooling lines are hooked up in the right place on the radiator and transmission.
