To E-Brakes or not to E-brake..that is the?

Greetings All,
Any of you folks running an automatic and no e-brakes? I am debating on whether or not to run an ebrake. It appears to interfere with the through the crossmember exhaust. Any advice? My tranny is a 700r4..in case it matters. Thanks MisterE

Our state inspection here requires it.

Hey Sr E
Here in flat south florida I eliminated everything pertaining to emergency brakes. I NEVER have used emergency brakes for anything so I thought that I would save the agravation of having to replace everything from cables, pedal etc.

They are nice to have in case of a system failure.

So true. I blew a brake line and later a wheel cylinder on a 97 GMC. It was nice to have a backup brake system to stop me both times I lost all brake pressure.

MisterE72 - Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought CA required E-brakes. I don't know, thats just what I was told the few months I spent there.

Well here in missouri there arent moutains persay but there are some large hills. I was on a long trip with my 69 MANUAL and started down a long hill, well about halfway down the brakes went to the floor. I tried to down shift to slow down but the hill was too big, i was just rapping the engine everytime i tried. I thank god my e brake worked good, because down at the bottom there was a stalled 18 wheeler hauling steel poles. If i didnt have the ebrake i woulda plowed into it and most assuredly killed myself. I emphasized the manual because i would much rather have no ebrake on a manual.

Having an e-brake for the reasons listed above a very good but another one is, your tranny will love you more. Not having an e-brake, by just putting it into Park, you put a lot of stress on the parking pawl and over time you can break this part.

Have you ever been parked on a hill and when you go to move it from Park, it is really hard to do and almost feels like something pops when it does move, that's the parking pawl being under load and being forced to release.

This is why e-brakes are commonly called Parking Brakes, you use them when parking.
