HELP electric problem

I have a 66 chevy stepside now what happened is my head lights will only work on high bean the low beam setting just turns off the lights but when the high beams are on it seams to draw off the battery more then the alt can handle and slowly kills the battery before some one asks the battery has checked out and the alt as well could the hole problem be the dimmer switch?
Ive tryed everthing i can think of now its time pick you brains so i can fix this

before replacing the dimmer can you bypass it and see if the low beams work?

i didnt think of that but would the dimmer draw power and cause the battery to die

search for relays , or check the faq for head light relays.
check the plug conection at the fire wall , check your grounds, and your head light switch, make sure all are clean

My 66 does not have relays. I had the same problem check connectors and bulbs. remove the connector from the dimmer switch and do the jumper.

none had them oe , add some you will be pleased brighter lights less draw on your battery

hey thanks a lot you guys i had some bad conections and the dimmer was al messed up so i jumped it and cleaned out all the conections and now my heads lights are brighter then ever but i dont know if i fixed the draw problem yet i just put a full charge and im waiting to see what happens
