Exclamation what do you guys think:dual shocks

i have dual shocks but i don't really think i need them....arnt dual shocks for like heavy loads?...and i don't tow anything with my truck at all. the previous owner use to use this truck for towing his boat so it has homemade dual shocks upfront and air shocks in the back...the only thing im worried about is will it make it ride worse without it...cuz i got a heavy front bumper

Re: what do you guys think:dual shocks

My truck came from the factory With the heavy half/ big ten suspention. So it has the 3 front leaf springs and the designation in the vin number. It has a single shock up front because they did not do the dual thing untill the 80's. I personally don't see the need for dual shocks just seems like extra money to me but then again I have never drove a dual shocker. I say if they are working leave it alone but if your gonna replace the shocks I would convert back to one and get some billstiens or ranchos instead of 2 cheepos.

Re: what do you guys think:dual shocks

Daul shocks are a racing thing that was taken for street use. It's only for looks, cool factor, on lifted trucks. To work correctly, the shocks need to be very soft, so soft that they wouldn't work well if only one of them was there.

The racing application is from long-travel suspension Baja style trucks. The extreme wheel travel would get the shock oil very hot and they would not work properly. So multiple shocks with lighter valving were used. Each shock was sharing the work with the others, so they didn't get as hot.

One the street, with lifted trucks that IMHO have springs that are too stiff anyway, multiple shocks just make it worse.
Shocks don't carry the weight, they just keep the springs from "bouncing" after a bump.

Re: what do you guys think:dual shocks

with longhair. But if they are working ok for you now, why spend money on them before they need to be replaced. That just seems like a waste of your money.

Your ride sucks now with no weight in back...Then I think you need to work on the back not the front set ups.

There's your problem. I suggest getting rid of the air shocks. They will generate a stiff ride.

As for the dual shocks up front, as long as they are lightly valved, they are fine. If they are gas shocks, then they are probably too much for your needs. If you went to a 35" or bigger they might be needed.

The '83 I used to have had 35s and it rode way better with single shocks. . . .I have 35s on my 79 with single shocks and the ride is just fine. IMO, the dual shocks (for most) was a fad. . .

Re: what do you guys think:dual shocks

After reading this im going to give the single shock thing a try. My burb came with dual shocks in the front and i run 37'' tires. Ill take one shock off of each side and report back....right now i have four rancho rs 5000's on the front and it is really really stiff up front.

Re: what do you guys think:dual shocks

put it back to a single shock in the front, throw the rear air shocks in the garbage, use the 2 shocks (that came off the front end) on the rear... i think that if you did that your truck would ride better.. just my $.02

Coulda been worse, I had just turned 18 my dad caught me at a friend's house the early morning after a party hungover and made me go help his buddy at his garage, my job for the morning? Change exhaust manifold gaskets on a truck just driven 30-40 minutes to get to the garage on a hot and humid day. Never felt worse working on a vehicle, never got so drunk I was hungover the next day either. In all honesty I hate working outside in hot humid weather, much rather turn a wrench in freezing weather.
