Lomax np205 3-to-1 transfer case

Anybody running this t-case in their 1st gen? Looks like a great swap-in if you have the cash. Been trying to decide to get rid of the dana 20 and go with the np205, but maybe this lomax is the way to go! If the cash is there, it looks like a direct swap in, with a serious upgrade! Let's see some pic's!

I still have the stock 205. I have only seen the pics and the BIG price tag, but it is a new xfer and lower ratios too. Would be nice to hear some real world comments about it

Unless your doing some serious (can you get more serious than what Burt does?) off-roading or rock crawling, I haven't heard anyone having issues with the stock 205. If I were you, I'd drive the Dana20 'til it implodes and then look for a swap. The Dana20 isn't a bad t-case, it's just not quite as stout as the 205.

I am not the utmost authority, but I have not heard of very many broken 205's , I am sure that it happens, but I would say a well built 205 with a decent driver in the seat is about as reliable as you would ever need? But if you have the cash, they are bad A's T-cases...and stronger is better when wheeling.

That's what I was thinking, real hands on experience. The price tag is high, but to rebuild or reseal the dana 20, I might be farther ahead to go for the lomax?

Looking at the jb website. Might be a stupid question, but it say's it comes with a 1350 yoke. Options include a 1410 yoke for the frt., and rear output shafts. I'm guess'ing this is for u-joint size, but I need to know so I can research for my upgrade to 1 ton status. Anybody got any ideas? I think I'm going the lomax way, and bypassing the stock np205 swap.

Dude that is a *****en Xfercase for sure!
The yoke output size is the Ujoint size. 1310 is stock up front but moving to 1350 is a GOOD move. 1410 is BIGer yet.
I currently have 1310 up front (wishing I had 1350) and 1350 rear w/1410 @ the 14FF yoke.
So keep this in mind cuz your drivelines and axel/pinnion yokes need to match were they connect.
If I was ording a LowMax I would get 1350 front and rear. 1350 is more common than 1410 so more parts

Ok, me bad! Looked back and figured out it would be better to have 1350 frt, and rear for better parts availability, etc. Does that fit good with the dana 60 frt, and the 14 blt rear setup overall? Can setup the output yokes on the 60, and the 14 for the 1350 also right? That would make simple sense, and make trail repair all that much easier! Thank's!

The Lomax is a good idea because it replaces the anemic 1.96:1 low range 1st gear of a stock 205 with a much better ratio for wheeling.

It all depends on the drive train you plan on running and what final drive ratio your looking to end up with when running off road.

Plan out your Transmission, T-case, axle gear ratio & tire size with what you want for a crawl ratio and the decision will be an easy one.

If your serious about crawling, then you need to be looking for something near the 100:1 mark and to give you a place to start, a stock th-350/205 with 4:10's will give you about a 40:1 crawl ratio.

VT it's been so long I forgot, how do you find crawl ratio again?
Like mine = SM465/Np205 w/4.56 & 36.8"Iroks

Stock D60 is 1310 just like the D44
I belive 14FF is 1350 stock but I don't know for sure as I had to buy a 1410 yoke when I put mine in.
You can buy 1350 yokes for the 60 so no worries there. Just remember if you buy a new yoke get the U-bolt type = Just say no to straps

Or:

I can't even know where to start, but here goes. Looking to set it up not so much for crawling, but offroading here in N. Michigan. Trailriding, hillclimbing, mudding, possibly running the sand dunes. All that, but still be streetable enough to get me there and back afterwards. Somewhere along these lines- smallblock motor, sm465 4 speed trans., lomax t-case, dana 6o frt, 14 blt rear. Were about does that put me?

An SM465 has a super low 1st gear, no real need for a LowMax with that combo IMO.

What gears are you running in the diff's?
Tire size?
Expected horse power?

When I multiply 2.52x1.96x4.1 i come up with about 20:1?

am i missing another 2x somewhere?

Just trying to understand how to set mine up

If I remember correctly, you double the crawl ratio with an automatic due to the torque converter's slippage at low RPMs.

My setup: 700r4/NP241/4.10gears = (2 x 3.06 x 2.71 x 4.1) = 68:1

We're running the same set up, 'cept I've got 4:56's.

Great combo that nets out a really decent 1st gear for wheeling with a 30% over drive for the highway.

What size tires you running?

I'm running 35's. I debated on bumping up to 4.56s, but the new motor should make more than enough power to overcome the 4.10s
