idle RPM's low

as of today for some reason when my truck is at idle the rpms are bouncing around between 300 to 500, and sounds like it wants to die. its allways idled around 700 and sounded strong. when i give it gas it lags a litle but then everything sounds fine. what could this be?

Re: idle RPM's low

You check for gasket leaks around the base of the carb? If you spray the base of the carb where it bolts to the intake manifold with a bit of carb cleaner and the idle changes and goes up then you have a air leak and you got to change your gasket. You could have gotten some bad gas too. Also what kind of carb do you have?

Re: idle RPM's low

I'd be checking for vacuum leaks as well. In addition to base gasket, check all the vacuum hoses coming off your carb and intake from where they start to where they end. I had a problem once where the vacuum line connects to the modulator on the trans.

Good luck.
