Remote Starter Solenoid

I am adding a remote starter solenoid to my truck to help with a hot start problem in addition to a starter shield. I live in Washington State where it likes to get real wet, real often and the truck lives outside.

I am wondering where to mount it. Too high on the inner fender and there is a constant drizzle from the hood lip. Towards the front of the apron and you get water coming in through the radiator at speed, at the rear, moisture dripping from the rear of the cowl at the hood or a heater core leak. Mount it to the frame and it is exposed to splash up from the wheel and heat from the exhaust.

I am thinking about mounting it in the little recess towards the bottom of the apron as indicated by the pic. Let me know what you think or pictures of what you have done. Thanks.

I don't have a pic, but I mounted mine on the inside of the fender above the inner fender, but it doesn't rain too often here.

Are you saying in front of the hood hinge?

In front of the hood hinge, pretty much in the middle, above the inner fender.

Re: Remote Starter Solenoid

they are designed to get wet... just like the starter.
Mount it away from the heat of the exhaust. if you mount it where you indicated, you'll be putting exhaust heat right on it... just like the one on the starter now. it'd be like taking a shower, and putting on dirty underwear.

Re: Remote Starter Solenoid

It is basically a Ford solenoid with a tab that goes from the bat post on the Delco starter to the solenoid post.
I'd mount it where it was out of the way and not close to heat from the manifold or where it could get splashed on.

"taking a shower then putting on dirty underwear"! we might have an expert here!! Hummmmm
Look at any ford---they all use the remote solenoid and mount on the inside of the fenders about 1/3 of the way back. In this case, Ford had a better idea!! Andy is right on--.

Re: Remote Starter Solenoid

Ford USED to have the better idea. For some reason, they have ditched it.
However, with modern electronics, and gear reduction stuff, it isn't needed anymore. (late model OEM stuff)

You know. Whenever I saw a pretty woman the truck would just shut down.

Re: Remote Starter Solenoid

I mounted mine on the passenger side fender - here you can see it a few inches from the battery.

Mine is in the same place as above and I've had no problems during the heavy Texas downpours. I have headers too, but the thing that really solved my problem was a high torque mini-starter. Even with the addition of the solenoid, I still went through a couple of starters, but after transitioning to the mini-starter, she fires right up even in the Summer months.

Good luck!

Re: Remote Starter Solenoid

2 questions:

1. Does anyone have a wiring diagram to do this mod? and
2. Will a high torque mini starter cure the problem?

Thanks,

R/

EDIT: Just saw the last post on the mini starter.
