Turn signal issue

82 gmc c15
Ok the problem is that when i activate the right turn signal or the hazards it blows out the turn signal and hazard fuse.

Trying to isolate the problem.
  • verified i was running 1157 lights.
  • disconnected rear lights to see if it was a bad socket or wiring no luck
  • Checked and cleaned the grounds. I counted 4 (two on the front right, one on the front left, and one on the rear left.
  • Took the front wireing out the loom and verified the was no cracking or shorts.
  • same with the rear wiring.

The left side still works great.

Do you guys have any ideas on what to test?

Could the charging system surge cause the hazard/stop fuse to blow? Why i ask is i had all the signals working. 5 min later i take it to the inspection shop around the corner and both fuses are blown which brings me to my current state.

Re: Turn signal issue

Have you checked the wiring and connections in your steering column?

Re: Turn signal issue

it will blow the fuze on a short not a ground..
i know it seems dumb.. but an easy way will be connect a multimeter and check for shorting between the positives leads at the bulb to the rad support..etc..
or you can check the lights when it's dark out.. and use a couple fuzes to see if there's a "spark" under your hood hehehhehe

Did you pull the steering wheel?

Unscrew the main plug on the firewall and unplug the lighting side of it, then check, if it still blows the fuse then I would suspect the problem is inside the column.

Did you try with only the rear lights hooked up? The short could be up front
but the amp draw from the rear could have been the straw that, blew the fuse.
Sometimes those round trailer plugs get loose wires inside, but I guess you would have checked that.

Re: Turn signal issue

I got the issue fixed. After Isolating that it was coming from the rear i started pulling the loom that runs from the back to the fuse block. As im de tangleing it it feels like its snagged on something. At closer inspection the loom has been pinched by my c notch bolt and has grounded out....yep you guessed it the right rear wire (dk green) a quick repair and everything is working flawlessly and my baby has passes inspection.

I appriciate the help isolating the issue.
