trans options for 250 6cyl?

Just wondering what you all are running behind the 6 cylinders? Stock or custom set-up. I've got the three on the column, and probably 3.73 gears, and was thinking it would be nice to have overdrive. But gear vendors type equipment is a little expensive. What are the options?

Re: trans options for 250 6cyl?

I have heard a lot of people have swapped in a 200R4 without much hassle. Currently behind my 250 I'm running a 2spd powerglide, but have considered the 200R4 swap.

There was a recent thread discussing the install fo a 200R4 on a 6cyl, it was in the 67-72 message board area, that might provide a little more information for your decision.

2004r definetly... find a good trans out of a heavier wagon, throw a cooler on it, and it will do everything you will need it to for $300 or less...

Re: trans options for 250 6cyl?

Hey thanks for the info...What about manuals? Anybody done a modern manual 5-6 speed. I've wondered about the 5 speeds from a late 80's early 90's 1500. I had one of those for 11 years and worked it hard, and only had to replace the clutches periodically.
thanks again...

Re: trans options for 250 6cyl?

I don't know anything about modern tramsmissions but there was an overdrive manual option for our trucks with a .70 OD which could be used in all forward gears providing 6 different ratios.
I don't know how hard it would be to find one of these. They were an option on 1/2 tons with 4.11 gears. (per the '69 Data Book)

I thought about switching to auto trans as suggested in some of the above posts and decided it was more work and expense than I wanted.

Re: trans options for 250 6cyl?

I have a Richmond Gear 5-speed with a 3.07 rear.

My other truck has a 292 with an SM420. I'm probably gonna shell out for the Gear Vendors behind that one.

Re: trans options for 250 6cyl?

I really want a overdrive automatic in my truck. I think the 700r4 would be nice due to the low first gear however Iam worried about the big drop in gear ratios going int 2nd. The 200r4 is more like the 350 with an overdrive. My 350 seems like a lower first gear would help.. does any one have first hand knowage on either?

NV3500 out of a 90's truck will fit the 250. There's posts on here about just that. I'm planning on putting one on my truck. You will have to do some fab work for the hydraulic clutch though

I'm running a 250 with the 3 spd. Saginaw & a Borg Warner overdrive unit.
There is a board member that just might have the complete setup for sale. Check with CG.

You may want to do some wheel spinning and some math. Most of the 3 speed 250's came with 4.11 gears. If so, a TH350 is going to wind out first gear practically by the end of the driveway, and your top end will be about 65-70 mph before you feel like you're wrapping the engine up too tight. I had this setup and dropped to 3.73 gears and it is much better... I don't feel like my motor is going to explode when I'm driving down the highway at 70.
