rust free cab no rust $300 bucks
I found a rust free cab with no rust for three hundred bucks. The problem is that it does not have a title or vin. What can be done about this without moving a vin off another cab?
Is $300 bucks a good deal for a rust free cab providing I can get a title for it? |

I would say use the vin/title off the frame.
You'd have to check with your state DMV for the laws, but I'm sure it's something you can work through. |

$300 are you kidding? That would cost at least $1500 in the northeast. BUY IT!

No VIN means no LEGAL TITLE, you can swap VIN's but it will always be illegal. If you are the type that does not care, it is a great deal. If you are like me, it would bother me evrytime I looked at it. I would always wonder who's truck I had...it is probably stolen. There is no other reason to take a VIN off a good cab. MY .02

If you get permission from the dmv to replace the vin tag its not illegal.

Then either cut out the door post with the vin on it to take along or load up the whole cab and take it along to have the truck inspected. You will end up with a "rebuilt" title but it will be a legal title and away you go. Otherwise swap the vin # and go about your business. I think one of the vendors sells original style rivits. It also may depend on who is selling the cab. If it is a wrecking yard or legit vintage parts dealer and you can get a receipt you shouldn't have a problem. If the problem is that you don't have a title to begin with you may be in for a lot of red tape. Last edited by mr48chev; 06-06-2009 at 12:11 AM. |

That would be the first thing to do.

Re: rust free cab no rust $300 bucks
i just bought a rust free cab for 400 about a month ago, and i didnt get a title with it, i loaded my old titled cab up onto the trailer with the new cab and brought it by the dmv, told them that i am restoring the truck the rusty cab is off and i need to use the non rusty one, they told me no problem come back on tuesday, so i did they had a inspector there and he checked over both cabs said yup the rust free one is better and he watched me remove the vin off the old cab, and then rivet it onto the new cab
maybe thats just a MN thing, but it relly wasnt to hard of a process i say buy the cab, and if you dont really care then swap vins, but other wise just go talk to the dmv they will either point you in the right direction, or tell you come back when the inspector is around, jut bring tools, cause they dont provide them

Your best bet is ALWAYS to check with the DMV and do what they SAY and PAY the TAXES and FEES they ask you to PAY. LEGAL is always BEST!!!!!

Re: rust free cab no rust $300 bucks
All you are doing is replacing sheet metal. There is nothing illegal about that.

Re: rust free cab no rust $300 bucks
The question isn't about being legal to replace sheetmetal. It's about the sheetmetal being legally obtained.I agree about using the DMV to find out how to do it legally. You probably just need to prove you obtained the cab legally and that it is not on the "hot list"You may have a bit of a search in the DMV to find out who knows how to do it in your state. They are notorius for being civil servant mentalities and many do only the minimum required to keep their position.
$300.00 is a great deal for a truly rust free cab.It is over $400.00 for a new floorpan.

Re: rust free cab no rust $300 bucks
Well in phoenix sbd headed over to go get this cab. Alasp picked up a no limit dash while here.
Called the dmv and if I had a bill of sale they will use the titled frame vin for the registration and title. Should be good to go! I'm excited first piece of the truck build! |

Very true. Its kine of embarrasing when the local SWAT team comes to your shop with guns drawn when they find out after the fact that your vehicle ater completed has stolen parts on it. It can be very costly even when you prove that you got the parts legally. They say ok your forgiven. Just pay your court costs and attorneys fees on the way out $$$$$$$$$$ |

Re: rust free cab no rust $300 bucks
Well picked the cab up and got a couple of doors with some rust on the bottom of them. I am sure I can find rust free doors around here so Ill probably use these doors for patch pieces or something.
I guess once I get a few pics Ill have to start my build thread. |
