Another Barret Jackson..."want to be" going to waste?

When I moved to Roseville a few years ago there was a 69 C20 sitting in the guys field just a few miles from my house. I stopped in a few times to ask if he was interested in selling his truck...he always answered: "Nope...some day I am going to fix up that truck It's pretty rare you know?" Well...fast forward...I went by his home this past week and guess what...it hasn't moved a foot. Still sitting in the weeds. I left my phone number but I don't expect any calls. Here the info that I took off the truck SPID...
CE248F117669
Model CE20934
Paint 4551AA
396 BB
400 Auto
Parchment Vynl
CST
AC
HD Springs

There were other options but this gives you an idea what is going to waste.

It's sad how many classics and antiques sit and rot because someone is "Going to fix it up someday" and they NEVER do. Then when they decide to sell it they want you to rob fort knox to pay for it.

Re: Another Barret Jackson..."want to be" going to waste?

A few years ago my wife and I were visiting some friends and they live on a chunk of property and i was walking around the prop and spotted a shed and a bunch of black berry bushes. I went to check it out and what do you know there was a 64 4door Continental Complete sky blue with white interior . Buried in the bushes, well i offered the guy 2k and i would clear the berry bushes, well he said his son wanted it to fix up...

no big deal right......

we went back a few months later and checked out the shed and the car was gone, i was thinking cool he came and got it and now it has a better home, boy was I wrong.

i went back to the house and saw the landlord and asked him how the car was, well he said its on a trailer on the other side of the house if ya want to check it out, so i did.

my jaw dropped when i turned the corner, he turned it into a demolition derby car... i was pretty upset, it was a very clean and straight car

My Uncle, GOD love him, is the same way. 70 Chevy CST SWB, Mid 70's model AMC Javelin, TWO 65 Mustangs, VW beach buggy, a Sandrail, TWO 46 Chevy 4 Door sedans, 40 Ford Pickup, and a 76 Corvette Stingray. Wants to restore all of them after he retires. Problem is by then there will be just enough metal left to make a Hot Wheels car.

His 70 CST is my avatar.

Re: Another Barret Jackson..."want to be" going to waste?

My '72 sat in my Mom's front yard in Oklahoma sinking into the dirt for almost 10 years. She had numerous people come and ask her if she wanted to sell it. She always told them "no, my son is going to come get it" ---

It's now in my barn here, slowly being taken apart to begin repairing. So not all those stories end badly...

I am slowly but surely getting all 5 of mine fixed up, 2 down 3 to go... Funny thing is I live on a fairly busy road that goes to a recreational lake and I have only had 2 people stop and ask in the last 10 years...

Re: Another Barret Jackson..."want to be" going to waste?

I can't say too much. I have 3 setting in garages waiting for my attention.

I have looked them over and have been making plans and gathering parts while helping my son with his projects and working.

Now that I am among the ranks of the unemployed and am able to get around better I plan on starting on the one that needs the least to get it going, then go on to the next.

My plan is to have my '71 lwb stepper ready for the car show in my home town next June.

We entered 4 this year.

Re: Another Barret Jackson..."want to be" going to waste?

Just up the road from me is a '67 short fleet that is slowly rusting away. The guy won't even consider selling it. It hasn't ran in 10 years or so. He says all it needs is-well he stripped the oil drain plug on the oil pan so it won't hold oil.

It's his, so whatever. I do still hit him up about it every couple of years or so.

Re: Another Barret Jackson..."want to be" going to waste?

My longhorn sat in the driveway for a couple years before I was able to get it on the road... I kinda felt like "that guy" every time I told someone that I was gonna fix it up. It turned into my daily driver/only vehicle for a few years. While it has never been fixed up to be a nice truck... it was put back into service.

And a side note... that VIN says it's a 68. Being a 3/4 ton with the CST package does make it a bit on the rare side... but most would still see it as nothing but a 3/4 ton LWB fleetside truck.

Re: Another Barret Jackson..."want to be" going to waste?

I have two trucks that were down to cab and frame. One is in my garage and the other is on a driveway next to my garage. They've been apart for at least 3 years.
After numerous inquiries about selling or restoring the trucks from neighbors and passerbys and me telling them I'm going to fix them up, I finally got tired of looking at the symbols of my ineptitude. I went to my storage unit and got all of the parts to my '70 and in one week put it back together. This week I'll get it running.
In the next two weeks I'll get the '69 put together and running.
I'll let my wife have the garage back, and I'll empty my storage unit.
For me it is a waste to have two classics sitting in pieces. I'd rather have 'em ugly and running. I'll switch off driving them to work. When I get more room and more time, then I'll actually restore them without letting them sit too long.

Re: Another Barret Jackson..."want to be" going to waste?

I drive by a blue 66/67 Lemans/GTO every day on the way to and from work that has sat out in the open in the same spot for 30 + years. Three or four miles from that is a green longbed that looks like a CST that hadn't moved for several years but I see that it has been moved a couple of weeks ago. I have a notion that the guys neighbor traded him another truck for that one.

I can't say much though as my 71 sat for about 10 years before I put an engine in it an my 48 has been sitting for 5 years while I figure out what I am going to do with it.

Re: Another Barret Jackson..."want to be" going to waste?

My 70 will be sitting in storage for the next 3 years and it's finished!

But I feel guilty when my 67 sits for a month when I'm gone in the field. On base, there are many abandoned cars and they don't always keep their parts, so I worry sometimes.

Re: Another Barret Jackson..."want to be" going to waste?

I felt guilty about letting two of my stepside setting for so long without doing anything to them after reading this thread earlier today.

This afternoon I used the '67 to carry a battery and some gasoline over to where my Jubilee tractor was stored. The Jubilee had been setting all winter and I needed to get it running so I could use it here on the farm.

After that I started the '71 lwb step-side and took it over to the garage and put a volt-meter in it.

There is a '67 lwb 3/4 ton stepper not far from here setting in the weeds. I ask the owner every six months or so if he wants to sell it and he always says the same thing, some day he is going to restore it. This has been going on for 5 years or so.

Re: Another Barret Jackson..."want to be" going to waste?

It's not a big deal with those who do have trucks sitting and will some day fix them up. My truck sit in the corn crib under shelter for over 8 years before I pulled the trigger to get The Circuit Rider transformed from a 39 year old well worn truck to a frame off beauty (I hope). Yes...the owners have the right to let their trucks rot away...but it is still sad. JMHO

Re: Another Barret Jackson..."want to be" going to waste?

My 68 has been mostly sitting for about 15 years, sheltered part of the time. Circumstances have kept me from fixing it up, but I will get around to it. Sometimes things come up that keeps folks from doing what they want to do....it is sad to see them rotting but many times there is a real connection to the vehicle and the folks truly plan to get them back in good shape at some point.

My 68 was my first vehicle, and I am really attached to it. I hate to see it sitting, but until I get to where I can get it fixed up I am stuck.
