A/c question on my 72 gmc..........
I don't even know if this can be answered, but maybe someone can send me in the right direction.
I've got a 72 GMC Shortbed Fleetside. It has an A/C Cab and what appears to be all the "original" A/C "Things" (yea I said it) under the hood. The previous owner put in a 1994 Vortec 350 Aluminum Engine..... (serpentine Belt) with an A/C Compressor, but none of its hooked up. Now this is probably a "Next Year" project and I actually have a renown, Hot Rod Mechanic in our County that specialized in OEM and Vintage A/C. I haven't bothered him with questions, because I simply don't have the money now and there are other "Priorities". But some of the questions I have are: 1)Would it be a NIGHTMARE to try and hook up the OEM A/C parts (from 72) with the newer 1994 Compressor ect? 2) If it WERE possible to do #1, would it be outlandishly expensive and just better off to go with an aftermarket "Vintage A/C"? 3)Which unit would be more efficient in cooling the Cab? I know its a far reach without know exactly what I have, but it doesn't cost anything to ask here and there have been ........ SO MANY KNOWLEDGEABLE PEOPLE on this Forum that are either willing to help or have had the same problem. So fire away! Roger

I am going to attempt the same thing after the summer is over. IIRC you would use the later model compressor for 134A, adjust your POA for 134A, have the adapters for the new hose connection swaged on, flush and refill with new dryer. I have also seen a write up of someone converting the system to a cycling system with a pressure switch.

Re: A/C question on my 72 gmc..........
Well I finally took my Truck by to see this AC guy and was........... COMPLETLY BLOWN AWAY!
So he looks under the hood and says.. "Oh this is one of the newer Compressors, so it takes R134 Refrigerant. That's good because it runs about $12.95 a Quart. The older R12 Refrigerant is $74.95 a Quart". Then he says..."Well you'll need new wiring, Plugs and Hoses unless they, (now he's scrounging under the hood) and says "AHhh what have we here..a compleate AC Wiring Harness and plug all neatly tucked away". "So all I have to do is make you (2) Hoses with fittings and you have the Compressor, Wiring, Fittings, condenser". I said "Under $500.00"? He says "Oh Hell yea...somewhere between $250.00-$300.00". It was a good day Scooter. Roger "RATIKLE"

Re: A/c question on my 72 gmc..........
Have hoses made that fit the new compressor on one end and the old stuff on the other.
Click your way over here to adjust your POA: http://www.autoacforum.com/messagevi...&threadid=7567 Depending on what the hoses cost you should come in way under $500.
