Re: rear axle bearing ??
No, the axle bearing is pressed into the rearend housing. You will remove the axle to access the seal, but the bearing can be left alone. Once the axle is removed, the seal is right there to be pried out and replaced.

Re: rear axle bearing ??
If you are just doing the rear brakes, you can leave the axle bearings and seals alone. IF you have a leaking rear axle seal, I would suggest replacing both sides at the same time.

Re: rear axle bearing ??
I have to replace my oil seals and had the same question over in this thread...http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=347621
So if I want to replace my bearings too, would I need to have someone remove the old and press in the new??

Re: rear axle bearing ??
No. You need the special puller to remove the old bearings from the housing. Then, you can knock the new bearings into place with an appropriate sized piece of pipe or even a very blunt punch and hammer.

Re: rear axle bearing ??
this will be a bit long. To replace the rear wheel bearings on our trucks, you will need to remove the rear axles. To do this, you need to:
remove the rear end cover have a catch pan under the cover to keep from making a mess. turn the rear end carrier around until you see a small bolt on the right side of the carrier 5/16 head 6 point bolt remove this bolt carefully push the center pin out of the carrier from top to bottom DO NOT MOVE THE CARRIER push the axles in a bit now and the c-clips will drop out remove them, and pull the axles out of the housing if you have borrowed a slide hammer type puller with the correct adapter, slip it inside the bearing, and pull the bearings IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A SLIDE HAMMER PULLER home depot sells rebar. go buy a piece that is about a foot longer than your rear end, and use it as a punch to knock out the bearings. I usually pack some grease in the new bearings, and coat the seal a little bit as well. hope this helps |

Re: rear axle bearing ??
fyi: If you have a Dana 44 or 60 differential you don't need a bearing puller.
More than likely you don't, but I thought I'd throw that in there. |
