292 water outlet issues
So Im replacing the thermostat and upper radiator hose and though I would replace the water outlet....however, the outlet that I got from the parts store is incorrect and so is the upper radiator hose and thermostat gasket.
My water outlet has the upright where the radiator hose goes and the side where the bypass hose goes. Can anyone help with finding a replacement water outlet, thermostat gasket and upper radiator hose that works? Local parts stores would be best....if you have part numbers and locations to try. Thanks. I tried autozone and oreilly. |

Re: 292 water outlet issues
According to LMC and O'Reilly's the thermostat and gasket should be the same as V-8s.
Local parts stores should have a flexible hose that will fit, I would think. A picture of what you need would help because all the reference books I have doesn't show the configuration you are describing. Hopefully some one else will add more if I bump this. Danny

Re: 292 water outlet issues
Ive worked on hundreds of 292's & have never seen one like that & with the oil bath air cleaner. It must be a real early model. The ones I have seen have the bypass outlet in the lower houseing. Up to about 73 they used a bypass hose like in the photo. After that they used a 5/8 hose with screw in fittings. I'm sure you could find a molded hose to fit it if you get a store to work with you.

I guess I just have a rare one then....Anyways, I broke down and got a flex hose today....even though I don't care for them. I also got the water outlet sand blasted to clean it out. It was pretty rough. Im gonna have to cut my own gasket. Im gonna go try to install all this now. Ill let yall know how it goes. Thanks everyone for the tips and advice.

Re: 292 water outlet issues
Ok. Well the flex hose isn't gonna work. It puts the hose too high for the hood to close. Back to square one. Also, the thermostat that they gave me, fits in the lower housing but doesn't match up to the groove. The old one fit it perfectly. So maybe my entire housing isn't right. Im also curious what the "plug" is that is in the lower housing? Maybe that is where my bypass is supposed to go and then I can run the "new" upper water outlet. Do I just need to pick up some sort of adapter? If my entire setup (upper and lower housing) is wrong, does anyone out there have an extra one laying around? Thanks for any help here. This is driving me nuts.

Re: 292 water outlet issues
If you made a mockup of the hose you need with a coat hanger and the sizes of the ends a parts store may be able to match it.
At least that is the way we have customers do it at the parts store I work at. The one I work at is really into helping customers since a lot of the employees are into old cars and trucks. Also if you made a template of the thermostat gasket they may also be able to match it. Worse case you cound forgo the gasket and use silicone seal, of course it would have to setup or like you said you could make your own gasket. Danny

Re: 292 water outlet issues
If by "plug", you mean the threaded brass "plug" with the small knob on the end opposite the heater hose, that's your temperature sending unit. I'd just bring a picture of the hose to a friendly parts store or the hose itself, if you didn't throw it away, and see of they'll let you look through the hoses they have hanging off the wall in back. Just compare right there in the store until you find what you need.

Re: 292 water outlet issues
You have a 63-66 292 in your truck, look at the one in this '65 C30
http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/...36965366fYZKiQ I bet if you go to the auto parts store and ask for a thermostat and radiator hose for a 65 C30 like this truck you will get what you need... |

Re: 292 water outlet issues
I just checked my LMC reference catalog and you have a water outlet that looks like the ones on the 63-66 292 l6 engines.
When I am working on my '67 I run into problems finding parts because it is made of at least 6 different year components. Danny

Thanks for filling me in. Wasnt sure what that was. mahanian: That does look like my engine. But the bypass hose looks like it is going to the lower housing. Not sure. Also, I looked on autozones website and they are showing the same part number for that truck and engine. Shyguy: I looked at the LMC catalog too and I dont think its the same. Thanks for the tips and help guys. I guess Im just gonna head back over to the parts store and figure something out. Im so sick of being there already. 2 times per day for the past couple days. It sucks. |

Re: 292 water outlet issues
I looked in the Carquest catalog. They show one that looks like it might be the correct one. it is for a 63 c-10 w/292. It fits 1 9/16 in-out lets. It is 17 7/16 center line lenght.(whatever that means). The photo shows a 90 degree bend near each end. The part number is 20492. That is Carquest- Gates #. Napa can cross it over to theirs.

I actually went down to napa and got a few things taken care of. I got the right gasket, thermostat and got a upper radiator hose and modified it to work great. Reused my water outlet cause I had it sandblasted. Now that that is all done, I gotta go get a bypass hose that works. Mine is to short and 2 different diameters. Its ok though. Cause there is an employee down there that helped me out greatly. To the store and back. Hope to have it tied up in a bit. Will let everyone know. |

Re: 292 water outlet issues
No luck at napa, autozone or oreilly for my bypass hose. The upper part needs to be 1in. ID and the lower part needs to be 1 1/4in. ID. It needs to be 11-12 in. long and have approximately a 75 degree bend in it. Any help out there?

Re: 292 water outlet issues
So what I did was find a bypass that was the correct form and it was 1 1/4 in. ID on both ends. I then bought a small piece of 1 in. ID hose. I cut the 1 in. ID hose to fit over only the upper part on the water outlet. I then put the entire 1 1/4 in. ID hose over that hose and secured it very tightly with a hose clamp and then the lower part of the hose fit fine. Just wanted to let everyone know that I got it taken care of. Thanks again for all the help.
On a side note, I found out that my heater core is no good. It started leaking when I was filling the radiator up with fluid. I just took one of my heater hoses and looped it to the connecter for the other hose and created a loop for the fluid to run. This should be ok for now right? I dont plan on using the heater now anyways. Its too hot and I gotta clean out the heater box housings cause they are rats nests. |

Re: 292 water outlet issues
I have a 70 292 and it is not that type thermostat housing. I would have suggested mocking one up with a coathanger then having a muffler shop make it out of stainless exhaust tubing, then just putting the hose ends on from a straight piece of rubber hose. That was how many 4x4s were.
I have also found out that many 6 cylinders used parts off of the older series trucks until they were gone. So alot of the key switches, brake parts, etc., are actually the same as older models. Never saw where you listed the year of your truck. Always look for the guy with the grayest hair at NAPA.
