Tranny swap/engine swap?
I have a 1967 chevy k10, with the 292 I6 and 3 on the tree manual. Turns out the tranny is completely shot. Is it possible to put an automatic tranny in its place? What all do I have to get? I dont really care if it has 4 wheel drive. So I dont mind just deleting the transfer case all together if that helps.
Also, I found a chevy 350 engine with auto tranny for cheap, how would I go about swapping that in? Would it be easier? Thanks for any help! |

Re: Tranny swap/engine swap?
It just depends on what you want.
Personally I like the l6 292 setup with a manual transmission, but an automatic can be put its place. It will probably require a different cross memeber to support the tranny. The 350/auto combo is not a real difficult job. Some things you will need is to put the engine mounts in the proper place, a different radiator with shroud and a new cross member for the tranny. I am sure other people will chime in that are more knowledgeable about this. Danny

Re: Tranny swap/engine swap?
Hmm....Id really like to keep the I6 if I could, Ive already added some things to it. What automatic transmissions would work with it?

Re: Tranny swap/engine swap?
Practically any chev. auto trans will fit. The 350 is a good one. If you want heavy duty a 400 is stout. If you have a low ratio rear end & want a better highway gear the 700-4R has o-drive. You will have to remove the crossmember under the bell housing & build one or get a universal one to go under the trans. If your 292 uses 1/2 in. bolts for the flywheel you will have to drill out the bolt holes in the flexplate & get blts for a 292.
