Rear Axle Bearings need Replacement?
I am in the middle of R&R of rear brakes on my 69 C-10. I noticed that when I turn the axle the bearings make a very squeaky noise(s). They sound as if they are not being lubed. I also drained the differential and do not know if it was low prior to draining. I guess I could measure the amount of fluid that came out. It does this on both sides. There is no play in the axle shaft or seal leakage. I am wondering if I should repalce the seals and bearings? Other than the squeaky noises the bearings make there is no other indications that I need to replace. Any advice out there guys?

I am going to go ahead and replace the bearings, the noise they make cannot be right and I already have everything pretty much torn apart.
I have priced out Timken bearings which are $10.99 each and BCA National at $18.99 each. Are the BCA National higher quality or just higher in price? |

Timken brgs are high quality. Sounds like a better price at that suplier. Those brgs ride on the axle shaft. It would be a good idea to pull them & make sure the axle are good.

The differential capacity is 3 1/2 pints of fluid.

I hit a roadblock on getting the bearings/seals out of the axle housing. Auto Zone had a slide hammer available rent free but not the correct puller to attach. All they had was a pilot bearing puller and it is too small. I called around to other parts stores and none have the correct puller. I tried to rig my gear/pulley puller to the slide hammer with no success. I am sure I could rig up something using a threaded rod/washer.... but I went ahead and ordered a KD axle bearing puller kit. I would rather have the right tool and not screw up the housing. Hope it arrives by next weekend |

FYI...Someone suggested in my thread to use a piece of rebar a little longer than the axle to push the bearings out from the other side....Thanks in advance for any pics and any suggestions...I could use them it sounds like!!!
