Re: Break in oil

Lucas Oil and Royal Purple make break in oil. My builder used Rotella oil. They all have the zinc that todays oils don't put in the oil anymore. Hope that helps.

Re: Break in oil

Honestly, and I'll probably get a lot of flack about this, I just used Castrol 20/50 on the motor I just built. Granted I used a lot of cam and moly lube while putting it together. I primed the heck out of it too before firing. After that I put in 20/40 Valvoline VR1. It's supposed to have more zinc content although there is great debate over that as well. No problems yet.

Re: Break in oil

I am not sure how many engines my son has built in his lifetime, 6 or so in the last few years I know of and always uses Rotella 15-40.

Re: Break in oil

Agree Rotellla 15-40 is the best you can get, break it in and run it with that oil. It takes alot better care of your engine. As long as there is no Catylitic Converter the extra zinc in it makes it the best you can use IMO.

Re: Break in oil

Rotella no longer has the high zinc content it use to have. Try the Delo stuff instead. Add some GM EOS breakin lube or other such product for breakin.

Re: Break in oil

I used the Rotella 15-40 and hopefully if thers no more steal fillings in the next oil change Ill be going forward to Castrol Syntec oil ...Yeah.

My last 400 SB went 280 thousand miles and 14 years and some of that was teenage its a racer miles lol.
If my new engine makes as good a show as that one ill swear by the break in process I was told by my father , and never missing an oil change with Syntec

Re: Break in oil

We've always broken them in on whatever was going to be used in the engine after the break in.
